What's better than an upcycled and inexpensive craft? This easy and versatile upcycled picture frame tray is a new favorite decor piece. I can make one in literally 2-3 minutes, and they only require handles, a frame, and glue! Why wouldn't you make one for every room of the house?!
Picture Frame Tray
Sure, you've seen these, as have I, and wondered, "are these really a good tray?". The answer is a resounding YES! I am so glad someone took a chance and created this cute little tray idea. I've made a few of these trays now, and I am in love with how handy they are around the house.
My next project is turning one into this homemade wall organizer. Such a cute idea! You could even use frames to make this homework after school checklist sign!
You can even make this fun framed jeans pocket organizer! So easy, cute, and fun!
Can I Paint My Picture Frame?
I found this cute frame with a beautiful exterior, but you can definitely paint your picture frame with any craft paint in colors you prefer. Of course, as the queen of repurposing and upcycling, I also love grabbing old frames at thrift stores, garage sales, and dollar stores.
If you decide to paint your picture frame, you will need to add time for it to dry before gluing on your hardware. Otherwise, it's an easy addition to the project that can make it match your decor with little effort.
Another great idea is this painted macaroni art picture frame. Super easy and a great way to really jazz up a room!
Where Do I Find Handles?
Head over to the hardware section of your local store and check out different drawer pulls. These are a simple set, but you can get them in a number of colors, finishes, and sizes to fit the picture frame you chose.
Another great place to find these is at your local thrift shop. If you have a Habitat ReStore in your area, they almost always have great drawer pulls that are pennies each!
And, my hidden secret for finding super unique drawer pulls at great prices? Etsy! I found these great wooden drawer pulls for just a few dollars for an upcoming tray I'm making!
How Can I Use This Tray?
The better question is what can't you do with this repurposed picture frame tray! Below are just a few of my favorite uses for a simple wooden tray, and of course, this falls into that category easily.
- On your coffee table to hold magazines.
- Hold your lotions, perfumes, or skincare items on the bathroom counter.
- On a side table with your glasses and favorite book.
- As a serving tray for cookies and tea to guests.
There are so many ways to repurpose picture frames for home decor! You'll never run out of fun ideas for using them for more than just sharing pictures of friends and family. I love this idea for using picture frames to make a miniature greenhouse, or even making a farmhouse lantern from picture frames. So many great ways to use them!
Supplies Needed
- Picture frame
- Drawer pulls/handles
- Wood glue
How to Make a Picture Frame Tray
Begin by taking the back off of your picture frame. You will want to remove any image and replace it with a solid piece of paper in the color you prefer.
Now, place the backing or a simple piece of cardboard back in place on your frame, and feel free to remove the "stand" piece so that it lays flat on the table.
Now, you will use heavy-duty wood craft glue to attach the drawer pulls, one on each side of the picture frame. You could also screw these in place if your picture frame is a sturdy wood piece.
Display or use as desired.
