Rustic Christmas Ornaments
As the queen of repurposing and upcycling items, I love rustic ornaments. This idea was easy to make and so fun since I could customize them with what I had on hand. It all started with a simple nature walk where I found a lot of simple twigs. Suddenly, I was inspired to make some homemade rustic ornaments for the tree. The result was these!
This year my tree is decorated with all of the best rustic decorations. Make sure you make these orange peel star garland for your tree and the cute rustic reindeer ornaments too for the full theme to come together.
Can I Add Paint or Glitter to These Ornaments?
Of course, you can! These are your ornaments after all! I like the idea of adding bits of glue on points of the star and snowflake and then shaking some glitter onto them.
You could even use glitter glue to trace along the lines of the twigs to make them stand out more.
If you wanted to paint these, I think it would be easiest to complete assembling them first, then spray them with paint. The tree could be green; the star could be white, gold, or silver; and the snowflake white or silver.
Definitely feel free to use your imagination to create a fun spin on these ornaments that could be customized for your tree and theme this year.
You could also turn a pine cone into a reindeer and fresh evergreen in your Christmas decorating to really add that rustic feel throughout your home this year.
Where Can I Find Twigs if I Don't Have Any Outside?
If you don't live in an area with a lot of shrubs or trees where you can gather twigs, that's okay. There are a few things you can do to make this work without having access to a tree outside to grab some from.
- Ask at a local florist for scrap pieces of floral stems or limbs of the greenery.
- Visit a local nursery for their scrap pieces of trimmings from shrubs and trees.
- Ask a friend or family member who lives in the country if you can come to grab some from their yard or property.
Supplies Needed
- Twigs or small branches
- Rustic thread
- Decorative stars
- Scissors
- Garden Shears
- Hot glue gun and glue
How to Make Rustic Christmas Ornaments Stars
To make a rustic star, you will begin with 5 twigs that are the same size. You can trim these if needed so they are closer in size.
You will begin by gluing the branches together one by one, creating the angles as shown.
Wrap a piece of rustic thread on every end to add to the rustic look.
Lastly, attach a loop of rustic thread to the backside of the ornament to hang it from the tree.
How to Make a Rustic Twig Christmas Tree
To make the Christmas tree ornament, you will start by picking out a few twigs in various sizes. You will choose one as the trunk of your tree.
Put the twigs on the main twig horizontally going for longest to shortest. You can trim them after they are in places if needed.
Once all the twigs are in place, you will glue a star or pearl at the top as the tree topper.
Add a loop of rustic thread to the bag to hang this from the tree.
How to Make a Rustic Twig Snowflake Ornament
To create the rustic snowflake ornament, you will need 4 twigs around the same size for the middle star shape. You will also need smaller pieces of twigs to add to the end. I used 14 small pieces.
Begin by attaching the 4 twigs into a star shape with hot glue.
Now, you will wrap the rustic bread around the middle a few times and secure it with glue.
Next, you will add the small pieces to the bottom end of each branch.
For a final addition, you can glue decorative stars on each crossing section on the snowflake.
