Paper Christmas Tree Ornament
My favorite part of the holiday season is hanging the decorations. Every year, I make an effort to create something new and unique to hang on the tree. This year, I turned inexpensive paper straws into these adorable little paper Christmas tree ornaments.
I love how easy it is to make each one unique by choosing different colors of straws, ribbons, and glitter paper for the star.
When I make these paper straw trees, I also like to grab this printable Advent calendar and set up for us to use every day until Christmas. Instead of a traditional calendar where you get a prize for yourself, this one encourages you to do something for others each day!
It's so much fun to have a simple bit of fun in the days leading up to Christmas day.
My kids also like helping me make these little paper ornaments. They are a great way to see how your kids have changed in their art skills over the years. Make sure to date them and add their names to the back!
They also love this list of DIY Christmas ornaments made from paper. So much fun to be had throughout the weeks leading up to Christmas!
Where Can I Buy Paper Straws
If you haven't seen paper straws in your department store or grocery store yet, they will be there soon enough. Over the last few years, they have become a favorite for foodies everywhere. Their popularity makes it great for me! I love using them to create fun crafts that are easy and inexpensive.
I buy my paper straws at the local dollar store for $1 a 10-pack. They are often less expensive per straw when you order them in bulk from places like Oriental Trading or Amazon. I prefer being able to get just a few of the colors or patterns I want rather than a bulk order of just one color.
You may also see them in the grocery store or craft store around the holiday season in different colors and patterns. If you find them on sale, pick up several packages to use in the future. I love these amazing straw projects, and great straw life hacks that you can use year-round!
What is the Best Glue for This Ornament?
My go-to glue for most craft projects is hot glue. It's easy, inexpensive, and rarely fails to stay secure. However, I also keep basic E6000 craft glue for simple projects.
Depending upon how long you plan to have these last, you could even get away with using a simple school glue like Elmer's. Just make sure if doing that, you allow it to dry completely and use a lightweight ribbon to hang the ornament.
Supplies Needed
- Paper straws
- Lightweight ribbon
- Glitter foam pieces
- Hot glue gun and glue
- Pencil
- Scissors or craft knife
How to Make Paper Christmas Tree Craft Ornament
For this craft, you will begin by gluing your straws together. I used 9 straws for each tree.
Once the straws are glued together, you will measure a straight diagonal line on each side to form a triangle tree shape.
Use your scissors or a craft knife to cut the excess paper straw off each side until you have a tree shape.
On the backside of the straws, you will glue 2 small pieces together at the bottom widest end to form a tree "trunk." I used alternating designs, but you can use whatever color you prefer.
Next, you will use your pencil to draw a simple star design on the glitter paper/foam board. I used purple and gold foam pieces with glitter, but you could also use cardstock and add glitter if you prefer.
Once you have the star shape cut out, you will hot glue it to the top of the tree.
Cut a 6"-8" length of ribbon and loop, gluing the open ends onto the back of the tree.
When the glue has been set, you can hang it from your tree or display it on a mantle.

Just thinking, you can still use the two parts that were cut to form another tree by attaching side-by-side its straight sides.
This will at least lessen wastage of the used materials. ?
