Scarecrow Flower Pot People
I saw this idea a few years ago using clay pots to create a person to set up in a garden. The one I first saw was dressed up as a farmer with overhalls, but I knew there was potential to make them customized for other types of "people." Making flower pot people for fall seemed like a great idea! Since I love upcycling and knew I wanted something that could work for Halloween and Thanksgiving, the scarecrow began to take shape.

Can I Use Plastic Flower Pots?
If you prefer to use a plastic pot over a clay pot, you can definitely do so. This might be a good idea if you have small children around or even pets who might bump into your scarecrow. You don't want to have a broken clay pot on your floor. That could create a potential hazard for accidentally stepping on a broken piece of clay and cutting yourself.
The goal is to keep the terra cotta coloring so it fits into the fall theme. For another great rustic scarecrow idea, you can check out my post for this decorative DIY scarecrow DIY clay pot lantern.
Can I Add Clothing to My Flower Pot People?
While I love the simplicity of this project, you could definitely add some clothing to your scarecrow project if you desired. Since these are small, you could have fun adding kids or baby clothes to it to create a more traditional scarecrow look. even if you just added "sleeves" over the arms, it would add a bit of an extra element to the look.
Flowerpot people come in a variety of styles and designs, so feel free to use your imagination when creating your fun scarecrow fall decor.
Supplies Needed:
- Flower pots (in 2 sizes)
- Rope
- Fake hay
- Rustic ribbon or burlap piece
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue
- Black marker
- Orange spray paint
How to Make Scarecrow Flower Pot People
To begin, you will gather your supplies and prepare your work area. If you need to paint your clay pots, you will want to lay a newspaper or a paint drop cloth on your table. Of course, I recommend that you do so outside or in a very well-ventilated room when using spray paint.
If you buy terra cotta pots, you may be able to skip the painting portion of this project. If not, you will spray all sides and edges of the pot with orange paint and set them on your newspaper with the opening down until they are dry.
Once your flower pots have dried completely, you will start with one of the larger pots to create the "head" of the body. I would like to add some burlap or a large piece of rustic ribbon around the pot.
This gives it a different color than the rest of the pots and adds some personality to the mix. Glue this in place, then use your marker to draw on the eyes, nose, and mouth. You can also use strips of black cloth to create the face if you desire. When making the face, remember that the opening of the pot will be at the top, so you will make a note to draw the face in the right direction.
Next, you will add decorative hay inside the pot's head, arms, and feet. I would just like to glue this around the inside rim so it sticks out well. A double layer can fill in any gaps you may see in the pot. You can always trim the ends to be closer to the same size if needed.
How to Assemble the Scarecrow
Once all of the pots have hay as directed, you will begin assembling them.
You will create the body by gluing two of the larger pots together, bottom to bottom, with the face on top.
Next, you will glue rope on the sides and bottom to dangle down like arms. At the bottom of each piece of rope, you will attach the bottom side of another smaller pot.
Once all are glued together you will have two pots glued together as the body and one arm on each side of the body as well as one leg on each side of the bottom body pot.
Feel free to add more embellishments like flowers, different colored "tie" ribbons around the body/neck, or even use different colored clothing or pots to add flair to the body.
