What if I Can't Find a White Planter?
Sometimes it is hard to find planters in solid white. If you can't find a white planter, you can easily spray paint any other colored planter for this craft. Another great option is to use any larger plastic container and paint it white then flip over to have a level top for the candle like this one. Use your imagination and find something around the house to upcycle for this craft if needed.
If you like the rustic look of this lantern, then you will love our farmhouse lantern made from picture frames.
What is the Best Glue to Secure the Planter Tray?
I love using hot glue for most of my crafts. However, depending upon the type of plastic tray you use for the "hat" on this scarecrow, you may need something that doesn't get hot and melty. I love using E6000 craft glue when hot glue isn't an option. It holds securely, doesn't melt the surface, and is inexpensive.
Can I Use a Plastic Pot for this Scarecrow Lantern?
The main pot in this craft is a clay pot. Ceramic pots, terra cotta pots, and plastic pots are all great options for the craft. The biggest concern for this is how easy it is to paint the pot to look like a scarecrow.
If you are using a traditional terra cotta pot, you will need to coat this in white paint. The easiest method is likely going to be using spray paint. If you use a plastic pot for this DIY scarecrow lantern, then you will need to make sure the plate on top and the decorations are not too heavy for the pot to hold up for long periods of time.

How to Make this Lantern out of Clay Pots
Gather all of your supplies together and prepare them on your work surface so everything is within easy reach. Since you may be using paint for this project, I recommend laying down a newspaper or paint cloth to protect your workstation.
Next, paint your pot if it is not white, and set aside to dry.
Your first step on your white clay pot is to begin drawing the face of the scarecrow. Use a simple pencil to outline your design before using permanent markers or paint to fill in the pattern.
You will draw triangles for the eyes, a square for the nose, and a stitch pattern for the mouth.
Once your face is in place, you will then attach the brown ribbon around the bottom of the planter with hot glue or craft glue. This will look like a neck and can be thin or wide, depending upon your preference.
Next, you will glue the decorative hay on the underside of the plastic plate or planter tray. I added a little on both sides and just a bit in back to resemble hair.
Secure the plastic plate on top of the clay planter's bottom to create the "hat" of your scarecrow.
After the plate is in place, you will place your battery-operated candle on top of the DIY scarecrow and cover it with a small glass jar or bowl.
Add other leaves and hay around the glass bowl as decoration before displaying. You can also add decorative fall flowers around the sides using hot glue to secure them.
