Lady Scarecrow Harvest Decor
I enjoy decorating for every season. That includes the harvest and fall season. The warm colors of fall and fun, popular decorations like pumpkins and scarecrows are a must. Having fun with upcycling items into crafts is something I've gotten quite good at doing. For Halloween, I found tons of amazing reclaimed wood craft ideas. As you can tell, upcycling items are a must when it comes to my life of creating new crafts and decorations.
For this idea, I used something I already had, wasting space in my closet. An old straw hat was super easy to turn into a great decoration that can be hung outside, on a front door, or even on your living room wall.
What Can I Use for the Scarecrow Hair?
I found this rafia in the craft store that is ideal for looking like hay. If you can, find some in your local craft store - it is perfect for this craft. For those who don't have access to this decorative straw, you can definitely use yarn to add hair to your scarecrow. Just glue yellow, tan, or brown strips of yarn to the hat instead of the straw to make a perfect head of hair on your scarecrow.
The hair on a scarecrow isn't meant to be perfect, so you can definitely get creative and mix your mediums up to give it a textured look. I often grab scrap pieces of hay, decorative raffia, yarn, or even strips of fall-colored clothes to add to crafts like this one. Those are perfect for adding unique character to any craft that has hair as part of the decoration.
Where Should I Display My Scarecrow Harvest Decor?
This cute lady scarecrow is a great addition to your fall decorations. While I have a great list of outdoor fall decorations for you, this is not one I would leave outside all the time. It works great in good weather, but it shouldn't get rained on, or it will come apart. Instead, you can display it inside or under the cover of a porch. Below are some places I have hung it in and around my house.
- On your front door instead of a wreath
- Above the mantle of your fireplace
- On a bedroom door
- Propped on a centerpiece in your home
- Outside on your porch railing
- Hang in your window

How to Make a Straw Hat Fall Decor Scarecrow
Gather your supplies and prepare your table or workstation to create your harvest decor. I prefer to gather everything and make sure I have it in one place before I begin. This helps save time and run back and forth for other items.
To begin the scarecrow, you will make the face of your lady on the top of the hat. I added large googly eyes with hot glue. You can use craft glue if you prefer.
A large orange pom pop makes a perfect nose on your harvest decor, but you could also paint a small styrofoam ball and add it to the nose.
Cut a piece of black felt or foam into a half-moon to use as the mouth of your scarecrow. Secure the mouth with glue toward the bottom of the hat top.
How to Give Your Harvest Scarecrow Personality
Next, you will bend the bill of the hat toward the top. This brings it forward toward you and makes the hat look more like the head shape you want. You will glue the bill to the sides of the hat head. Before you glue that in place, you may want to begin attaching some of your hay or yarn for hair. Adding some beneath the hat fold, as well as on top, will help the hair look fuller and more natural.
Tip: If hot glue doesn't hold your hair in place, you can also sew or staple it in place
Finish adding your yarn or hay as hair until you have the amount you prefer. Once your hair is in place, you will be able to add more decorations.
Your final step will be to glue ribbon, leaves, and even artificial fruit and cinnamon sticks. Arrange things until they look the way you prefer.
