Recently I was walking down the street, glanced down at my foot, and saw something colorful and unexpected. I picked it up and discovered it was a painted stone by a local artist who had been leaving them around town for others to find.
That made me want to paint some rocks too! And I was on my way to the grocery store when I saw that painted stone, and in the produce aisle later, it hit me. I would paint my rocks and then I’d use them as markers in my garden!
I decided I’d make a video so that I could share this craft idea with you. I love how my painted rock garden markers turned out, and I think you will have a great time making your own.

How to Make Garden Markers from Rocks
This is a fun, fast and easy project, and it is one which adults and kids can both enjoy. The bright colors make the finished result really stand out.
What Supplies Do You Need to Paint Garden Marker Stones?
You only need a few supplies for this easy craft project. To start with, you will need some rocks or stones to paint. They can be whatever sizes or shapes you want. When you pick them out, you can try to visualize which fruits they could represent.
Next, you will need spray paint in different colors (alternately, regular paint with brushes works okay too). Pick the colors out based on the types of fruit you want to make.
Finally, you will need some type of markers or pens which can draw on top of the paint and show up opaque. Gel markers or pens can work well for this purpose, as can metallic pens or markers.
If you prefer, you can use paint and small brushes, but you’ll have an easier time achieving precision if you go with markers or pens.
What Can You Do With Your Painted Rocks?
Once you have painted your rocks and they have dried, there is so much you can do with them! The most obvious use is to set them out in your garden as markers for your own plants.
But you can also put them on a desk or shelf, or gift them to a friend. Whatever you do with them, they are sure to delight all who see them.

Instructions
- This is a very simple craft which only has a few basic steps. To get started, select one of your rocks and a spray paint color corresponding to the type of fruit which you would like the completed rock to look like. Apply the spray paint to the entire rock, allowing it to dry as you go so that the rock is completely covered.
- Once the step above is completed, all you need to do is draw on the details of the fruit using the gel pens or markers. You can feel free to use your imagination and creativity to their fullest on this step. Every single rock can look completely unique by the time you're done with it.
