It is amazing how many fabulous Easter crafts you can make using the most ordinary supplies. In this video tutorial, I will show you how you can upcycle an old egg carton into some cute little Easter hens!
I’ve made a lot of cute DIY Easter bunny projects this year, but it occurred to me the other day that I hadn’t made a lot of Easter chicks yet.
When I realized that, I started thinking about ways I could make Easter chicks out of simple household materials, and I came up with the idea of crafting them out of old egg cartons.
Actually, more specifically, I came up with the idea of making Easter hens out of egg cartons. Yep, you don’t see as many Easter hens as Easter chicks, but Easter chicks have to come from somewhere, right?
Using egg cartons makes a lot of sense for Easter, since you’re probably buying more eggs than usual as it is! You don’t want those used cartons to go to waste. This project allows you to upcycle them instead of just throwing them in the trash.
If you're ready to begin, you can find the full list of materials and tools you need below. Along with these materials and tools are a set of written instructions to go along with the video tutorial.

How to Make Cute Little Hens for Easter Out of an Egg Carton

In search of a fun Easter craft? Happen to have an old egg carton lying around? If so, you have what you need to make some adorable little Easter hens! With just a few other simple supplies, you can complete this DIY project. Watch our video tutorial to get started.
Materials
- Red or pink foam sheet
- Yellow foam sheet
- Red feathers
- Googly eyes
Tools
- Scissors
- Hot glue and glue gun
- Scalpel or similar precision cutting tool such as an X-Acto knife
Instructions
- The first step is to cut out the basic shape of the Easter hen from the egg carton.
- It's a little awkward to explain how to do this in words, but I will do my best. The Easter hen is going to actually hold an egg, so you will want to make sure that one of the egg cups is fully intact. This will sit at the rear of the hen.
- In front of this will be one of the tall protruding sections of the egg carton, which will become the hen' s head and neck.
- You will want to keep part of the cup in front of that to serve as the rest of the hen's body. You should leave about the same amount of the cups to either side, as these will become the hen’s wings.
- I think visualizing this from these written instructions alone would be quite difficult, but you should be able to see the shape you need to cut out from the images and the video clearly.
- Next, get a pink or red foam sheet and cut out the shape of the hen’s comb and wattles. The comb is the bit that goes on top of the head, and the wattles are the fleshy bits which go under the beak.
- You will now need to cut out the shape of the hen’s beak from the yellow foam sheet. I created a diamond shape and put a fold in the middle so that it would look like the hen’s beak is open.
- It is now just a matter of gluing on all the parts. You can start by attaching the comb to the top of the hen’s head. You can then glue on the googly eyes near the top of the head, with the beak right below. Under that, glue the wattles.Get the feathers and glue those on to either side to create the wings.
- Finally, set an egg in the back.
Notes
While I recommended using foam sheets for this project, construction paper would work fine as well.
Also note that while I used red feathers since they stand out well against the egg carton material, you could ask a use white feathers or any other color of your preference.

You should be able to make a few of these with just one egg carton. If you have several egg cartons to work with, it shouldn't be hard to make an entire flock of cute DIY Easter hens. You can then display them as I did in my images of my finished project above.
