20 Strange but Effective Everyday Uses for Castor Oil

Modified: Apr 16, 2024 by Vanessa Beaty · This post may contain affiliate links · 117 Comments

If your parents ever gave you castor oil as a child, you know just how unpleasant it can be. What is great about this medicinal concoction is that it is filled with Vitamin E which makes it perfect for a number of things, although taking it orally may not be one of them. It is also filled with proteins, minerals and has anti-fungal and antibacterial properties that make it virtually a cure-all for anything that ails you.

20 Strange but Effective Everyday Uses for Castor Oil collage.

The taste of castor oil alone is enough to make you ban it from your home forever, but there are a number of seemingly abnormal uses for this medicine that do not require you to taste it. Although it can still be used as a laxative (sparingly, of course, because it works really well), you don’t necessarily have to put it in your mouth to reap its benefits.

Some pregnant women choose to take castor oil to hurry up their labor, although every doctor in the world recommends against this. Because it works as a laxative, it can actually cause dehydration if you take it without actually needing the laxative effects. Otherwise, there are many different ways that you can put that old castor oil to work, and you don’t even need a spoon.

1. Lubricate Scissors

Hair and scissors

Castor oil makes a wonderful lubricant for scissors. Because it actually can be ingested, it is much better for use on metals that touch food than other lubricants that should never touch your mouth. Just rub a bit on your scissors or other utensils and let it sit for a while and then wipe clean with a paper towel or clean cloth.

2. Soothe Eyes

Woman's face

Castor oil works great to remove tiredness from around your eyes. It works much like petroleum jelly but without the mess. Before you go to bed at night, just rub a little around your eyes and even on your eyelashes. Be careful not to get it in your eyes. It will soak in overnight and leave you looking and feeling a bit more refreshed in the morning.

3. Hair and Scalp Treatment

A woman is scratching head.

If you tend to have dry scalp or dandruff, you can rub a little castor oil into your scalp and massage it in to alleviate the flakes and itchiness. Incidentally, the oil works really well as a conditioner, too. Just mix 2 teaspoons with an egg white and a teaspoon of glycerin and massage into your wet hair. After a few minutes, rinse with warm water.

4. Arthritis Pain Reliever

Checking knees.

Massaging castor oil into achy joints will give you a bit of relief from the pain of arthritis. You can mix castor oil with enough turmeric or cayenne powder to make a paste and then rub it into your joints. Be sure that you don’t get this in your eyes, especially if you choose to use cayenne pepper instead of turmeric.

5. Repeal Moles in the Yard

Adorable mole.

Moles hate castor oil, probably as much as children do. If moles are tearing up your yard or your garden, must mix ½ cup of castor oil with about 2 gallons of water and pour into the molehills. Note that the castor oil will not kill the little creatures but it will definitely make them start looking for somewhere else to hang out.

6. Healthy Bowels

Woman hands on her stomach area.

While you should use caution anytime you actually ingest castor oil (because it works so well as a laxative), mixing just a teaspoon into orange or cranberry juice each morning will keep your bowels working regularly. You can also take a teaspoon if you want to detox your intestines, but again, be sure that you limit how much you actually ingest.

7. Perk Up Ferns

Healthy ferns.

If your ferns seem to be a bit less than healthy, a mixture of castor oil will perk them right up. Just combine a tablespoon of the oil with 4 cups of warm water and a tablespoon of baby shampoo. Drip about 3 tablespoons into the dirt around the fern and then follow with regular water.

8. Healthy Skin

Woman's face

You can apply castor oil directly to your skin if you want a more youthful glow. Many people don’t know that this oil is great for eliminating and preventing wrinkles and for pregnant women, castor oil rubbed into the skin can help to improve elasticity and prevent stretch marks caused by pregnancy.

9. Calluses and Corns

Feet

Castor oil applied directly to the affected areas can help to relieve calluses that are caused by a number of things. You can also massage a bit of castor oil into corns to help alleviate the pain and swelling that they cause and ultimately make them disappear over time. This takes a few applications, but it definitely works.

10. Make Hair Grow

Woman's long hair

If you have balding areas on your scalp, or you just want thicker hair, you can massage a bit of castor oil into the affected area for about 6 minutes every day to promote natural hair growth. This also works on eyebrows, so if you want thicker eyebrows, just massage a few drops into your eyebrows for a couple of minutes every day.

11. Repair Split Ends

Hair with split ends.

Another hair benefit of castor oil is its ability to help prevent and repair split ends. Just apply a few drops of the oil directly to the ends of your hair to reduce the amount of breakage that you see. It helps restore the health of your hair and will make it much less brittle so there is less breakage.

12. Healthy Lips

Healthy smile

Even though you may not want to have castor oil anywhere near your mouth, it does wonders for dry and cracked lips. In case you didn’t already know, castor oil is actually added to many lip remedies that you buy over the counter. You can simply rub a bit on your lips, and it will help heal cracks and prevent further chapping.

13. Relieve Sore Muscles

Oil massage.

Castor oil is wonderful as a general massage oil or you can use it to alleviate sore muscles. Just apply directly to the sore area and then massage for as long as you like. Do the same for general massages. It feels great even if you don’t have sore muscles, and the Vitamin E content is great for your skin.

14. Scratches

A woman is scratching her itchy back.

You can relieve the pain from scratches and other abrasions by using castor oil, too. You don’t have to mix it with anything. Just add a few drops to your scratches, and the healthy properties of the oils will begin to heal them much more quickly than without adding anything. It also works great at curing ringworm and other fungal ailments.

15. Acne Treatment

Face acne.

Castor oil works great as a treatment for deep cystic acne. It helps to decrease the inflammation from the acne and kills bacteria, which helps the acne clear up. It works really quickly, too, so put it on before you go to bed, and you will notice a drastic improvement when you wake up in the morning.

16. Insomnia Treatment

A woman with headache.

You can help to cure your sleepless nights with castor oil as well. Just rub a bit on your eyelids before you retire for the night, making sure that you don’t actually get any in your eyes. The castor oil will help to bring about a peaceful night’s sleep and you will wake up refreshed in the morning.

17. Alleviate Colic in Babies

Baby

Ok, so you don’t actually give the castor oil to babies who have colic. Instead, warm just a bit by rubbing it in your hands and then gently massage the baby’s belly area. This will help to alleviate the pain of gas and other tummy troubles in your infant and help them to sleep without causing any adverse side effects like many over the counter medications.

18. Hemorrhoid Treatment

A woman with hands on her stomach area.

Castor oil works great on shrinking hemorrhoids and alleviating the pain and itching that they cause. You just have to soak a cotton ball in castor oil and then apply it to your hemorrhoids. Note that this really only works for hemorrhoids that are outside the body. Just leave the cotton ball on your hemorrhoids for about 15 minutes or so, and you can do this multiple times each day if needed.

19. Beautiful Nails

A woman is showing her hands.

Massaging just a small amount of castor oil into your cuticles and on your fingernails each day for a couple of months will give you long, healthy, and beautiful nails. You can also use it on your toenails, so if you are already getting ready for warmer weather, now is the time to start those pedicures with castor oil.

20. Remove Warts and Skin Tags

Skin warts.

Castor oil can be used to remove unsightly warts and skin tags. You just have to apply the oil to the wart or skin tag every day for a few weeks, and you should begin to see that mark disappear. Note that this will not work on moles on the skin, so make sure you know what you are trying to remove before you begin using it. Click here to buy Castor Oil 40% off.

The short answer is no, but some oils have benefits that do the same for the skin or the hair, etc. I will recommend castor oil for its specific ingredients, that are antibacterial, contain proteins and vitamin E amongst other things. If you can find oils who contain the same then I see no problem in trying.

Flagy, everything you post is a big fat NO... Perhaps your issues are just with Castor oil, perhaps you have tried EVERY SINGLE use? Perhaps your mom made you drink it everyday?
A little joy and positive thinking cans do wonders for a bitter disposition, but as you say: if you don't have it, you don't have it!

There might be a goth/emo site out there for your ginger contributions.

It is not like "if you don't have it that's it". It is the way you eat. THAT's eat, the way you eat determine how healthy are your nails, your skin, and your body in general, nothing else.
True that oils can't give a little external help and only that.

To get thicker hair, try an easy DIY hair mask.
      - 1 egg yolk
      - 1/2 ripe avocado
      - 1/2 banana
      - 2 tablespoon of olive oil

Mash the avocado and banana into a puree consistency, until there are no clumps. Or it will be very hard to get them out of your hair later, so make so that there are no clumps. Mix in the egg yolk and olive oil, mix it thoroughly. Apply this mask on dry hair and leave it in for 15-30 minutes, then rinse off with cold water, warm or hot water will cook the egg yolk. Wash your hair with shampoo, make sure to wash the mask out of your hair.

This mask worked so well on me, that is why I'm recommending this mask and its quite easy to make.

You could try coloring your hair with henna. It is very pigmented and it's really good for your hair, using this will result in a very messy bathroom and it will leave color on your hands if you don't use gloves.

There are no chemicals in it, it's just a powdered mixture of herbs.

Begin with three tablespoons ( if you have short hair ), six tablespoons ( If you have long hair ) of henna and add very warm water ( Remember you are going to apply this to your hair from the scalp too end, so add as hot water as you can tolorate ) to make a paste, but be careful not to add to much water and apply this paste as fast as possible for it not to get cold.

Think of it like this, while its warm, it opens up your follicles and gets the chance to leave more pigmentation that might last longer, which depends on how often you wash your hair.

If what you've made is not enough, just make more and make sure to apply as equal amount on every part of your hair to get the best results. Apply it on your hair from the roots to the ends, when your done. Put a plastic bag or wrap a towel ( Don't forget that henna it very pigmented and will leave stains on your towel, so either choose a towel that you will onlly use for this or a very dark colored one ) on your head and leave it on for abour 2-3 hour, you can leave it on for maximum 8 hour. Then rinse your hair with warm water and shampoo, it will take quite a bit to get the henna out of your hair so you will need a good amount of shampoo and a lot of time.

It should color your hair quite well, but it might take two or three times for it to color all of your grey hair, which does depend on how much of it you have and you need to take a week or two break in between coloring your hair with henna. Because it does leave your hair quite dry, you could just apply a bit of castor, olive, argan or coconut oil after you have washed and dried your hair. It makes your hair look so glossy and shiny, just don't put to much on, a little by a little.

I hope this works. Good luck.

PS: Try to buy it at an International or in an Asian shop to get the best quality henna, so you can get the best results.

        Have to reply to Flagy..
How can anything be good for you with your negative vibes. No karma from your persona.
FYI- organic raw castor oil ( i prefer balck castor oil) has thickened my eyelashes and eyebrows ( using it only 2-3 mos) and I will continue to use it ... my skin as well looks glowy and smooth esp. around my eyes. I apply it my skin after deep cleaning it at nite and massage it on my face in the morning I am 70 yrs old and no one can guess
Didn't look this way 4 mos ago So I atribute it to using castor oil 2 x a day or more, if I have no make up on. Love the stuff! Have been into natural organic oils rather than creams for years. Other beautiful oils should be used also after the castor oil massage -

Who ever that Flagy person is needs to grow up! People are just trying to share their experiences with castor oil. Yes natural things can help improve things such as skin and hair. Just like external things like putting chemicals or using heating irons and such can damage your hair. Same goes with your skin. It is the largest organ on your body and can be effected by external influences. Detergents, sun exposure and being in cold weather can do a number on your skin.
First time to visit the website. Found the information helpful. I just bought two bottles of castor oil.
I plan on using it as much as I can. Thank you!

You should try it. Studies have shown that it has a lot of benefits to your hair and skin, but you need to do your own experimentation. Everyone is different and so people get different effects and results.

Try it as you wish and get to know how it works for you and how it doesn't. It's natural, which makes the risk of some bad effects or result as minimal as possible.

Get some fresh Castor Oil, 5 or 6 years old it wont be near as good, if it is at all good. Like all things have a shelf life. May still be used for scissors or some other uses but not for health, vitamin e is probably all gone, etc.

Fresh is probably better, but I had some in my cupboard for a very long time and tried it on my eczema in desperation and it is helping. My hands are VERY sensitive, so even most of the natural things don't help, but castor oil IS. I am SO happy! Now, to try the other things on here... : )

You seem to know a great deal about everything. If someone says they tried castor oil and it worked for them. I'm pretty sure it worked for them. How many people do you know making an income off castor oil?? Really?? I use it. It is great!!

My sister has both knees replaced, for the pain and swelling, my niece boiled some arnica and after boiling for 5 min, let it cool down a little, wet a small towel, and apply on the knee. Arnica is a dry herb that you can buy in Mexican supermarkets.

You can also buy arnica oil, gel or lotion, or homeopathic arnica pills. The stuff is great for reducing pain and swelling. Can purchase on Amazon or any good health food store. But have found that castor oil works almost as well on painful joints, and it is cheaper than arnica oil.

I have also been advised to have my left knee replacement. I am doing castor oil massage & heating it three times a day. During bed time, I castor oil bandage &rap it with polethene bag.I heat it with heating pad.It is only 3 days matter. 40% relief I am feeling. I will continue with same practice. I feel with God's grace I will have complete relief without knee replacement

I have rubbed a little bit of Castor oil on two keratosis lesions on my face, morning and night, for about 3 weeks.
One has almost disappeared the other one is greatly reduced. I am so excited. I started using it on my rosacea affected areas and the redness is much less. Great information!

That is false. Oils absolutely help reduce scars. Do not lie and discourage people. I have used Bio Oil to reduce scars and thin stretch marks and had amazing success when applied daily, and i tracked the progress. I will be trying castor oil next.

It is very likely castor oil could help with light stretchmarks since oils like this help skin. I will be testing it as a potential replacement for Bio Oil.

Yes, because it is a laxative, extremely effective. If you take too much you could literally kill yourself through dehydration. You will shit yourself to death.

I have a rash in the breast area which has been there for years although not visible. I have since had breast surgery due to cancer and have had implants. Can I use the castor oil in this area to treat the rash/itch? I am worried it will adversely impact the implants. I was think of using the oil pack as the rash is in a wide area.
