We’ve all enjoyed those traditional ham and cheese sandwiches – you know, the ones that make the holidays so wonderful. I bake them every Christmas, and my family loves them. These baked ham and cheese rollups are a wonderful new take on that old traditional recipe. You get the same ham and cheese deliciousness along with the Worcestershire, mustard, and poppy seeds, but in a whole new way that you’re bound to love.
These yummy roll ups only take about 40 minutes to make and that includes the prep time. They would be great for any family get-together, or they may just become your favorite holiday recipe! If you love filled rolls, you also need to check out these cheese and bacon filled chicken rolls – they’re the perfect sit down family meal.
You could use the traditional Swiss cheese for these, or, if you prefer, substitute for sharp cheddar or any sharp cheese that you like. I’m a huge fan of sharp cheddar and think that would taste wonderful as a substitute if you aren’t a fan of Swiss.
These are so delicious and so very easy to make. I whipped up a batch for a Super Bowl party, and they were a huge hit. I can’t even imagine going back to the old way of making these. The puff pastry makes them taste so light and fluffy – and you can totally substitute pizza dough or crescent rolls if you want. Oh, and these baked avocado fries with jalapeno sauce are also a huge sports party hit.
So, if you’ve always loved those ham and Swiss rolls, you are really going to love these ham and cheese roll-ups. They’re actually easier to make than the rolls – since you don’t have to slice the rolls before you fill them – and they have such a wonderful flavor. Add these to your must-do food list for your next party, and I guarantee your guests will love them!

IMO, this recipe needs some tweaking. First, I made the recipe exactly as written. Then I made it again, making some changes. Based on that experience, I offer the following: 1. Sharp cheddar is too strong, and there's way too much cheese - completely overpowers the ham. I re-made it, using swiss, and a bit less of it. Much better. I think even mild cheddar or Gruyere might be nice. 2. The recipe can make many more than 6 or 9 roll-ups. That number of pieces doesn't allow the dough in the center to cook well - it remained dough-y. I remade it, and cut 20 pieces/roll-ups. Again, much better. 3. The baking time was way off...it took much longer to cook than indicated in the recipe - about 15 minutes longer in the original make. In the re-make, I took about 40 min. I use an oven thermometer, so I know the oven temp was correct. 4. The "juice" was way too much and too greasy; the roll-ups were just swimming in melted butter. In the remake, I made the same amount of butter sauce, but I brushed it on all the pieces - several times. It really worked out nicely, still leaving the roll-ups with a nice, tasty glaze. 5. The dough tends to unroll, leaving an open, sloppy-looking finish. In the remake, I inserted a toothpick in the "loose" end of the dough, holding it all together. The finished product had much more appeal. 6. Misc. comments: I don't know what "sweet mustard" is, so I used honey mustard, which was a nice flavor, with the other ingredients. This is an easy recipe to make, and doesn't require a lot of prep time. I think it can easily be made using other products: cheeses, meats (eg: turkey, pastrami), slivers of pickles or olives, etc. Give it a try!
