What Paper is Best For Making Homemade Cards?
When it comes to making cards at home, there are a few different types of paper you can use. It really depends on the look you're going for and how much time you want to spend on the project.
Here are a few different types of paper and what they're best suited for:
- Cardstock: This is a heavier type of paper that's usually used for making invitations and other more formal cards. It comes in a variety of colors and can be decorated with all sorts of things like ribbons, sequins, and glitter. This is my go-to paper for a homemade card like this one. Just know that when folding this, it's a bit less forgiving and will remain creased, unlike some other papers.
- Construction paper: This is a thinner paper that's often used for school projects. It's available in a wide range of colors and is perfect for making simple cards. It can support the details of this card and can be easier for younger crafters to work with.
- Basic craft paper: This simple paper is thinner and lightweight, but comes in tons of colors and patterns. It can also be found in the scrapbook paper area of your hobby store. This is much easier to work with than cardstock, but not as sturdy as some other papers.
- Wrapping paper: This is a great option if you want to make a quick and easy card. You can find wrapping paper in all sorts of fun designs and colors. While this is fun for simpler handmade cards, it doesn't work well with this card. This card is too heavy for most wrapping paper to support.
Can I Cut Out a Tulip From Paper with My Cricut?
Absolutely! If you have a cutting machine like a Cricut, you can easily cut out the tulips for this card. This tulip SVG file I found on Etsy has 78 different options to choose from and is super easy to load right into the Cricut or Silouhette program to use with your individual machine.
This is a great option if you want to make a lot of cards at once. You can also cut the tulips out by hand as I have done. If you don't mind them not being as uniform, this is a great way to save time. If you're going to do this, I recommend using cardstock or construction paper. These papers are easier to cut than thinner papers like wrapping paper.
More Ways to Make a Handmade Card Unique
If you're looking for more ways to make your handmade cards extra special, here are a few ideas:
- Add a personal note: A handwritten note is always a nice touch. You can write something specific to the recipient or just a general message. Either way, it'll let them know you were thinking of them. I love the idea of including a favorite quote or even scripture verse on the card.
- Include a photo: This is a great option if you're making a card for a family member or friend. You can include a recent photo or even an old one. Just make sure to choose a photo that you know they'll love. You will also want to write the name of who is in the picture and the date it was taken for those who save it in scrapbooks.
- Use fun embellishments: There are all sorts of things you can use to decorate your card. Glitter, sequins, ribbon, and buttons are just a few possibilities. Get creative and have fun with it! For this, I love the idea of using embroidery floss for the stems of the tulips. The 3D texture really adds something special.

How to Make a Tulip Card
The paper colors I mention below do not have to be used for your card. It is simply an easier way for me to describe each step to you. Before you begin, I recommend gathering all of your supplies and having them ready on one workstation so it's easy to create without getting up and down multiple times.
The first step is to fold your base paper in half horizontally to create the classic card shape. Use a ruler or a paper folding tool to make the lines and creases even and straight when doing this.
Then, cut three of the cotton pads into teardrop shapes. Cut the edges of two of them into a tulip shape with 3 rounded points. If using the SVG files, this is the time to cut them out.
Once you have your three tulip tops, you will then color the bottom edges with a green marker. This will make them look more like the real greenery is under the flower.
Glue the half circles onto the bottom edge of the card, so they overlap slightly.
Cut a few angled strips of green paper to look like blades of grass or flower stems in different sizes and heights.
Glue the green stems onto the card, so they are tucked behind the white halves at the bottom.
Draw a stem for the flowers that curves downward going from the middle of the green grass to the upper half of the card. Repeat this so you have three at different angles and heights.
Now, glue the three pieces you made earlier for flowers, onto the bottom of each of the stems.
