Old Blue Jeans Coaster
Aren't these the best coasters ever? This is a great project for anyone who wants to add some personality to their living space. Not only are these coasters functional, but they’re also really cute and unique.
You can use any color of denim you want, so the possibilities are endless. Plus, this is a really easy project that doesn’t require any special skills or tools. All you need is an old pair of jeans and about an hour of your time to make a whole set.
Want to add more fun to your tables, make these cute upcycled CD coffee bean coasters, these rope coasters, or even these adorable clothespin coasters. All are super easy to make and adorable!
How Big Should My Coasters Be?
A typical coaster is about 4" in diameter. You want to make sure you are making the old blue jeans coaster at least 4". That makes it big enough to sit under most cups. You can make it larger if you want to use it with bowls or saucers.
If you tend to use cups that are bigger than a typical cup or you just want something that stands out, you can make it as large as you like. Remember that the larger you make the coaster, the more material you need, so plan accordingly when buying or finding old blue jeans to use for this project.
Can I Make These Waterproof?
It is hard to make this completely waterproof. You can seal the fabric and that should prevent most of the moisture from getting inside. To make it water resistant, you want to seal the fabric with a top-grade sealer. You can use something like Mod Podge or a spray sealer.
Depending upon the type of sealant used, you may want to seal the fabric before rolling it into the coaster shape. Then, once the coaster is formed, you want to create another layer of sealer. Seal the top and the bottom well. I like to come back every few months and seal the tops and the bottoms of the coaster again as a way to keep it water resistant.
If Not Waterproof - Can I Wash These?
While sealing it is nice, it is not necessary for these to be a great durable coaster for many years to come. When not sealed, they are not waterproof, but denim makes that okay as it is pretty easy to wash and dry.
If you do not want to add the sealer, you can also keep it as is. It will not be waterproof, but you will be able to wash them. I like to add a thin layer of Mod Podge or nail polish over the top to help prevent fraying, but if you don't, as it frays slightly, you can cut the extra strings when it comes out of the washer.
What Can I Use to Go On the Edge of the Coaster?
You can use whatever you have on hand to do the edge of the coster. I love the look of a piece of lace around the old blue jeans coaster. Denim and lace are just a beautiful combination.
However, you can use another piece of jeans or a brightly colored piece of fabric. Ribbon, beaded ribbon, or even burlap can all be used if you prefer. They can all make it even more beautiful and easy to fit a holiday or seasonal theme if you want.
How Can I Customize My Coasters?
The plain denim with lace edging is beautiful, but you can so easily make them more unique to fit your own preferences. Some ideas are below for inspiration.
- Weave colorful ribbon between or around the denim in a spiral as you form the circle for the coaster.
- Add rhinestones, beads, or sequins around the outside edge instead of the lace shown.
- Paint or sew a monogram initial to the center then cover with sealer so each person in the family has their own custom coaster.
- Cover the outside of the coaster with burlap to fit the farmhouse-inspired look that is popular.
- Cut small strips of denim and braid them to use in place of the seams from the pants if desired.
Supplies Needed
- Old blue jeans
- ¼" white lace ribbon
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue sticks
How to Make a Denim Placemat
Start by cutting seams from a pair of blue jeans. You can cut the seam from the inside of the denim pant leg, around the hem, around the tops of pockets, or even from the waistband.
Once you cut the seams out, you will begin rolling them into a circle, gluing the denim to itself, until it is between 3 ½" to 4" wide.
Repeat this process, adding more denim seams as needed, to make it as large as you prefer.
Once done, you can then cover the outside edge with ribbon, lace, or fabric. Glue this into place, then seal the coaster if desired.
Repeat this process making as many coasters as you want. They typically come in sets of 4, but you can make as many as you want to have around your home on all of the end tables, or to wrap and give as gifts.
