I’ve always been fond of baskets because they’re usually quite pretty and they’re rather versatile. You can use them for neat storage of all your yarns, other craft supplies, toys or blankets (which looks so much better than plastic containers!) or you can use them carry stuff to the beach or as actual picnic baskets. In my world, there is always a use for yet another basket.
If you have a friend’s birthday coming up and aren’t quite sure what to get then this basket can also make an excellent present, and you can give it your own little personalized twist with different colored yarn, or even make it multicolored. If you’re still on the crochet train after making this basket, have a look at some of our other easy crochet and knitting patterns, or if you need some more homemade gift ideas, perhaps you’ll find something in our master collection of 100 DIY gifts.
I found a pattern for this beautiful basket that I simply had to share along. It has an oval base and rounded rectangular corners, but please don’t get hung up on perfect corners. If you find yourself having some trouble, just browse through the comments – you’re likely to find some help there.
This exact pattern resulted in a basket size of 22x24x17cm (that’s about 8.6x9.5x6.7in). So the supplies you will need are:
- Rope – 38m long (125ft) and 6mm (0.2in)
- Stash yarn
- 5mm (H-8) crochet hook

the basket in the photo sure looks a lot larger than the dimensions given in the directions?

Ooh can't wait to try this!

Tried it, it did not turn out the way I wanted.
She needs to walk us through a couple more rounds and whether the use of starch after we are done is good in helping shape the basket.
I undid my crocheting 5 times on the bottom and re-crocheted it. The first 8 rows go well, then it just either rippled on the bottom of it, or when I got to the sides after the bottom goes slouchy.
Could use some guidance here. I am not new to crocheting I have done numerous crocheting projects over the years.

I also had troubles with the corners. I had to undo and redo the bottom of the basket a couple of times. But I found a solution! The sad truth is that sharp corners do not come by themselves just following a pattern. I had to guide the rope very patiently. I found very useful crocheting normal single crochet along the sides (to give more strength to the project) and starting crocheting in the back loop only when I was approaching the corners. This way the bond between the two rounds is weaker and it gives you more room to adjust the rope as you want. What is also very useful is to make much larger stitches in the corner, again to have more room to adjust the rope as you want. It is not easy to explain by words, but I hope it helps. Anyway, wonderful tutorial, thank you so much!!!

I love the basket but I am having trouble started after I do my chain of 30. I’m still fairly new at crocheting so I can’t get the yarn to attach to the rope.
Is there a video that could show me.
Thank you.
