Who's ready to make a Candy cane mini tree ornament? This is a great project for the holidays. It's easy to make and it looks really cute! Kids will love making these adorable ornaments to hang on their trees. Make it with kids at home or use it as part of a holiday party at school. It's even possible to have kids make them for gifts for the family.
Candy Cane Mini Tree Ornament
Crafting is a great way to celebrate each season. This mini tree ornament is no exception. Not only will this candy cane ornament look so cute on the tree, but it is also a lot of fun to make. With very simple crafting materials, kids make these ornaments for everyone they know. Be sure to date the back so you know when your kids made their adorable mini Christmas tree ornament.
Alongside this, you might want to make this adorable peppermint candy craft stick ornament or even this rustic twine-wrapped candy cane. Make your entire tree a gorgeous peppermint-themed decoration this year!
What Can I Use to Create the Candy Cane Look?
Picking what materials to make the candy cane look is easy. You can use anything from colorful paper, felt or even cardboard. Recycling old paint samples is another option for making the tree. Even white paper that has been painted or colored will work too. I
like the way the glitter looks when making these candy cane mini ornaments, but it isn't necessary to use foam paper. If you want, you can check most crafts stores to find glitter felt, foam paper, or scrapbook paper that looks like mine.
If you want to help make this craft take a bit longer to create, you can have kids design the paper themselves. They can color or paint the white paper. Then they can even add glitter. If you want the candy canes to be a little stiffer, you can glue them to cardboard or brush them with Mod Podge.
What Shape Do I Cut the Tree Pieces Into?
You want to cut the pieces of the mini tree ornament into hearts. Cut them into various sizes to give the tree the look of being smaller at the top and larger at the bottom. You and the kids can cut the hearts out by hand, cookie cutters as I did, or use different size heart hole punches. These are typically located around the scrapbooking materials at the craft store, or you can order them online.
Do I Have to Top with a Rudolph?
I think Rudolph adds a cute touch to this mini Christmas tree ornament however, you get to add whatever you like. Things like the classic stars, angels, or even a jingle bell will look great on top. Of course, you can even just leave it plain and hang it with a loop of ribbon or twine with no other decoration.
You can also add things like ornaments, sequins and other things to the mini tree ornament. What you add to your tree is completely up to you or your kids. Make all the trees match or make each one its own version. There are so many choices and it makes this a great craft that you make with the kids that they can feel proud of making truly unique as their own!
Can Kids Make This?
This is a really fun craft for kids to make. You will want to watch small children with the scissors or you want to cut the hearts out for them first. The paper punches are really easy for kids to use if you want the kids to do it themselves.
You will also want to make sure you are using kid-safe glue. I recommend using a white school glue or white crafting glue. Kids should not use a hot glue gun because of the risk of injury and burns. They can, however, potentially use other non-toxic glues. Or, my favorite option is to use the peel and stick foam paper so no glue is needed at all, they just peel off what's needed to stick it to the craft stick before hanging!
Supplies Needed
- Red glitter foam paper
- White foam paper
- Miniature reindeer ornament or sticker
- Craft stick
- Twine
- Pen or pencil
- Heart cookie cutters in 3 sizes
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue sticks
How to Make a Candy Cane Mini Tree Ornament
Using the middle-sized cookie cutter, trace a heart and cut out of the white paper then set aside.
Do the same with both the largest and smallest heart shape and set aside the heart shapes.
Glue the largest heart, upside down with a point facing upwards, about 1" from the base of the craft stick.
Glue the white heart just above that one.
And then add the smallest red heart at the top creating a tree that is two colors.
Create a loop of twine and tie the end then glue to the top of the craft stick.
Attach the little reindeer or a star shape to the top of the "tree".
You can then write a name, message, or date of the year made on the exposed part of the craft stick.
Hang it on to your Christmas tree!
