Can I Use Ready-Made Pom Poms Instead?
Making homemade pom poms are so easy. Because you are making them yourself, you can make the pom poms in any size and in any color. If you do not want to make your own pom pom, you can easily buy them premade. They are sold in most stores with a craft area. You will have to deal with what colors you can find and the size that they are.
What is the Best Item to Use for the Garland Base?
Garland can be made with almost anything. You can use rope, twine, or even ribbon. Raffia also works well and has a bit more of a rustic look to it when finished. Of course, you can always go with the yarn or fishing line that you have on hand already for a matching or clear look that works on any surface.
You can even attach these pom poms to a string of lights. You would want to make sure that the pom poms are not touching or near any of the lights. It is also important to never leave the lights on unattended, for safety's sake. However, I am sure that these reindeer would look great on a string of red lights.
What Can I Use to Make the Reindeer Noses?
I am using a piece of red crafting foam for the nose on my reindeer. Anything red can be used for the nose, and you could even just add a brown nose if you weren't making them Rudolph, but just general reindeer.
I love the idea of using a red or brown pom pom, bead, felt, construction paper, or even a bit of ribbon tied into a ball. You could even use sequins or anything that is small and red that can be glued to the pom pom.
Where Can I Hang This?
This pom pom Christmas reindeer garland can be hung almost anywhere. You want to make sure that you hang this inside because it is not safe for inclement weather. Other than that, your decorative style is the limit. Hang the garland along the mantle. You can hang it in doorways or archways. The garland can also be hung just from one end of the room to the other.
You can even use these cute reindeer pom poms for other things too. They would look great on gifts with the gift tag and name, or they can be added to a headband or hair tie as a fun holiday fashion accessory! There is no end to the ideas you can use to make this a part of your holiday routine and decor this year!
Supplies Needed
How to Make a Pom Pom Reindeer Garland
Make your own pom poms by wrapping the brown yarn around the palm of your hand 50 to 75 times.
Cut the end of the yarn with extra length, then slide it underneath the bundle on one side of your hand and around to tie in the center.
Pull the yarn bundle off of your hand and secure the tie in the center.
Once the ball of yarn has been tied in the center, you can trim through the edges to create the pom pom and trim around to make it rounder.
Repeat this process for 6 to 10 pom poms depending upon how long you want to make your garland.
Tie the pom poms every 4" to 6" on a long piece of twine the length of what you plan to hang it on.
On brown foam paper, draw an antler shape then cut it out. Trace it onto the paper and make 2 for every pom pom then cut them out.
On red paper or felt, draw a small circle, then cut it out and use it to trace and create one for each pom pom.
Attach 2 antlers to the back top of each pom pom.
Then glue on a red nose and two googly eyes on each of the pom poms.
Hang on the mantle or doorway!
