What Can I Use for the Base If I Don’t Want to Use Toilet Paper?
Using toilet paper is easy because it is something most people already have on hand. If you don't want to use it, you can use other things. The key to whatever you use is to make sure it is short, wide, and round. Some things that would work are below.
- Plastic containers from things like coffee, cocoa, or chips.
- Empty tin cans from vegetables, soups, broth, etc. in various sizes.
- Cardstock or construction paper is cut into a 6" wide and 10"-12" long piece and rolled into a large tube that can be stapled or glued on the side as a base.
What Can I Make the Gnome Beard From?
There are so many things that can be used to make this gnome's beard. I am using yarn. It is an inexpensive material and can be found easily. Below are some more great options that can be used to make a gnome beard on this Christmas decoration.
- Ribbon or fabric twisted into thick ropes.
- A small mop head.
- Fake fur.
- Plarn made from plastic bags woven into "yarn".
- Felt strips
- Fabric strips
- Twine
- Raffia
- Rope
Can I Decorate the Gnome Differently?
The best thing about making crafts is that you can make them however you want. You are not locked into the same old colors and styles. Make this gnome match your style and your decor.
You can easily make your gnome any color you like. I am making him in red for typical Christmas decor. You can make him match your living room or kitchen colors, or you can also make it in your favorite colors. Even just adding messages or little trinkets to their hat will look cute.
More fun ideas are to hang ornaments or bells in the toilet paper gnome's beard. Of course, you know I am going to add glitter to the beard as well. It's easy to make your gnome unique with different holiday decorations, colors, or styles. And the best part? It can be made over for any holiday, not just for Christmas!
Where Should I Display My Gnome?
You can place this little gnome anywhere inside your home. You can use it as part of a centerpiece or on the mantle. Place him under your Christmas tree. You can even make several of them under the tree. Since gnomes are known to love the garden, place this little guy in one of your potted plants for a fun look.
Of course, you can also use this toilet paper gnome as a toilet paper holder in your bathroom. You have seen the toilet paper cozies that people like to sit on the back of the toilet, use this guy to make a festive toilet paper cozie. There is no limit to what you can do with this guy.

How to Make a Toilet Paper Roll Gnome
Place the roll of toilet paper on its side on the edge of the gray foam paper and mark to measure the width you need to make the wrap. Then measure around the toilet paper roll to see how long the paper needs to be.
Cut the length of the gray foam paper to the same "height" as the roll of toilet paper and the same length that is needed to wrap around the roll once. You may need to cut two strips and glue them together to make it long enough to wrap around the roll of toilet paper.
Wrap yarn around a piece of cardboard or similar item that is the same height as the roll of toilet paper. Continue wrapping 20-30 times, then cut the end and cut along the bottom to free the yarn from the board.
This will give you a bunch of yarn pieces that are approximately twice as "tall" as the toilet paper roll or the height of the gray foam you already cut.
Add a short strip of hot glue along the top edge of the foam paper, then lay the yarn over the paper so the ends are at the base and it hang over the top of the paper. Press down to attach the yarn to the hot glue.
Repeat this process, cutting yarn strips and gluing them onto the foam piece until it is completely covered.
Wrap this piece around the toilet paper roll and secure the ends together with glue, being careful to not glue the paper roll.
Trim the edges of the yarn to make them even then set the base aside.
On a piece of white cardstock, measure out a half-circle that is long enough at the base to form a circle that would fit over the top of the toilet paper roll.
Cut this out then glue to the red felt and trim off the excess felt to have a half circle remaining.
Add glue to the bottom edge of the half-circle, then roll into a cone and hold to secure.
Place this on top of the toilet paper roll.
Place the styrofoam ball onto the tan foam paper and cut a circle to fit around the ball.
Glue the ball onto the foam paper and wrap it around creating a tan "nose" for your gnome.
Attach the nose to the gnome on the front just below the base of the red hat.
Add any other additional decorations or just display your gnome!
