DIY Baby Pacifier Diaper Cake
This DIY baby pacifier cake is perfect for new parents. It makes an adorable shower gift because parents will always need more diapers! At the same time, it has a cute handmade touch that lets the mom-to-be know you were thinking of her & her family while you created the fun and colorful craft.
Diaper cakes are a perfect gift idea for new parents, but they can also be great for use as a decoration for an upcoming baby shower. If you like this idea, you may also want to check out the diaper bathtub baby shower gift or this cute jungle-themed diaper cake. Of course, my personal favorite happens to be the diaper cake train!
Can I use cloth diapers instead of disposable diapers?
Many parents choose to cloth diapers, and you can certainly substitute reusable, Earth-friendly diapers in your diaper cake. Just roll the diapers up and secure them with a rubber band, the same way you would Huggies or Pampers.
One thing to note, though, is that cloth diapers aren't as thick so your diaper circle may be smaller if you don't choose to add more diapers to the craft. As long as you have 15-20 the pacifier will still stand and look great!
What supplies do I need for a pacifier diaper cake?
For this baby gift project, you'll need a few supplies you have on hand probably, plus a few specific things, like the diapers. It's easy to make this using only $5 to $10 in supplies out of pocket!
We used ribbon from our craft stash, as well as some clips we had leftover from another project! But any ribbons would work great and there are many options available online for other decorations too.
- Diapers
- Cardboard
- Pink tissue paper
- 1" wide ribbon (pink or white)
- Pink balloon
- 2" burlap ribbon
- Rubber bands
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue sticks
How to Make a Diaper Cake Pacifier
Roll 15 to 20 diapers up individually and wrap a rubber band around each one, then set aside.
Cut a circle out of cardboard (approximately 9" across), then lay it on the fabric or wrapping paper.
Trim the paper or fabric so it can comfortably fit around the cardboard circle. You'll have two circles of fabric or paper that are slightly larger than the cardboard. Make sure you don't leave too much excess or it'll be difficult to attach the ribbon in the next step.
Secure the trimmed paper or fabric to the cardboard with glue.
Wrap a piece of ribbon around the edge to create a finished look. Trim the excess ribbon and glue the ends in place.
Carefully add a thin line of glue around the edge where the paper or fabric meets the ribbon and fold the ribbon down to glue the edges. Smooth the ribbon all the way around on both sides of the cardboard.
Blow up a large balloon (pink).
With the scissors or a utility knife, carefully make a hole in the middle of the cardboard circle.
Next use a wooden skewer or similar tool to poke the inflated balloon's knot through the hole on the circle.
Arrange the diapers (already rolled and secured with a rubber band) on their sides so they are standing up, to form a circle. and secure with another larger rubber band around the entire circle of diapers.
Cut a strip of matching fabric or paper approximately 4" wide and long enough to wrap around the full circle of diapers.
On the center of this strip of paper, glue a strip of 2" burlap or decorative ribbon.
Wrap this double ribbon around the center of the bundle of diapers then secure with glue as needed.
Stand the circle up and glue the seam-side of the ribbons to the underside of the cardboard circle.
Display or gift at your next baby shower!
What Variations Can I Make on My Diaper Cake?
This is just a base idea for a fun little diaper cake, but you can customize it to suit your baby shower theme or the new parent's personality. Below, are a few ideas that would work great with this overall baby gift theme.
- Make a rainbow: If you're using more than one color of diapers for your cake, arrange the colors in a rainbow pattern.
- Use a monochrome theme: Create an all-white diaper cake with several different ribbon colors to alternate around it for a whimsical rainbow look.
- Add extra toys or baby gifts: Attach a silicone pacifier or two with ribbons for a cute touch. Add some extras like little toys, tiny socks, or a plush toy to make this project even more personal!
- Use alternative base items: Instead of diapers, roll up various sized baby onesies or tees for a great way to add to the baby's wardrobe.
- Attach two together: If you need two (TWINS!), this DIY is easy to duplicate in two different colors and styles, not to mention attach so they look like a set of pacifiers.
