When the weather turns and you start to feel that unwelcomed cold again, there really isn’t anything better than cozying up on the couch reading a book or watching a movie with a nice comfy blanket to keep you warm. I don’t know about you, but I always wrap it all around my legs like a body-burrito so that none of that cold air can sneak in. So when I stumbled upon a pattern for a lapghan my eyes lit up as I realized that this thing is exactly what I need for winter! But then I looked around even more and found the ultimate lapghan: a mermaid (or merman!) lapghan complete with “scales” and a tail! I just love the whimsical and fun element to something that is otherwise rather boring, albeit it very useful.
After paying way too much for a mermaid lapghan pattern and being more than just disappointed with the result, a friendly crocheter—the Mad Hooker—decided to make life easy for the rest of us and created her very own free pattern that definitely won’t disappoint.

It’s playful, it’s cute, it’s warm, it’s cozy and it’s free. What’s not to love?

Has anyone ever made this in gray tones? Wondering if it would look like a shark tail? Maybe add some eyes and teeth to the top of the blanket?
cathy
it wouldn't really, sharks don't have scales and their tails are oriented differently

I just finished my first medium sized mermaid afghan so I wanted to leave a comment to let others know how much yarn I used. I decided to use 3 colors : Caron Simply Soft Party in Royal Sparkle, Carob Simply Soft Party in Fuchsia Sparkle, and Red Heart super saver in Grape Fizz. The colors look beautiful together and complement each other well. The sparkle yarns are glittery so they work well as mermaid scales! I used 2 each of the sparkly yarns and 4 of the grape fizz yarn. I alternated with a different sparkly yarn in between each row of grape fizz (fizz, fuchsia sparkle, fizz, royal sparkle, fizz, fuchsia sparkle, fizz, etc).
I was happy with how the body turned out, but I felt as though the tail could have been larger.
Hope this helps anyone who is wondering how much yarn to buy. I made the size medium for a 5 year old girl.

Would you mind sharing a picture? These colors sound beautiful!

Finished three of these, would post a picture if I knew how. They are so pretty. My husband made one of the three and he is starting another one at this very minute. Going to have 4 very happy gals in a few days. We made matching sneaker slippers for them too. Her video is well worth the watch before you begin, makes it all crystal clear, and written directions are easyt o follow.

Just a thought I was thinking of doing a single crochet on the opening sides to make a more finish look when I'm done
