Are you a gnome fan? I sure am! I absolutely love how cute these little guys are. So versatile, cute in the house and outside the house, and super easy to make. This little fall DIY gnome decoration is a great way to add some life to a boring fall decoration in your home. Tuck on a shelf, add to a wreath, or as part of a centerpiece and add some life to something boring in your home. What a cute idea that is cheap, easy, and super fun to customize!
Fall DIY Gnome Decoration
Gnomes. Gnomes. Gnomes. Why are these cute little guys so fun? I don't know why, but I do love them. In fact, they are one of my favorite decorations for gardens. This year, you can make your own and turn it into a cute addition to your fall and holiday decorations. This one is super easy to make and cheap to boot. That makes it a great choice for anyone to make. You can make this for just $1-$2 easily!
I've made cute little Scandinavian Easter egg gnomes and even a Christmas pom pom gnome ornament in the past. Now you have another fun gnome to add to your collection. You can even have the kids make some paper gnome houses to add to your garden. Or, use an old sock and rice to create another Scandinavian gnome decoration.
What Can I Use For the Gnome Nose?
I love the look of the wooden button as a nose for my gnome, but that isn't all you can use for a nose. Traditionally, gnomes have a large round nose. Since there are no eyes on these, you want them to look big and bold. While I like having the little brown bead, there are tons of other ideas for making a nose. Below are a few more you might like to try on your gnome.
- Wrap a cotton ball in cloth and glue in place.
- Use a large button in a bright red or orange.
- Make a ball of yarn and glue in place.
- Add a pom pom in a vibrant color.
- Cut a circle of felt and glue in place as the nose.
- Stuff a piece of hosiery with batting and glue into place.
- Use different colored beads.
What Else Can I Use For the Gnome Hair?
I like this little fake fur or hair that you can find in your craft supply shops. They are super easy to find in craft stores and make an excellent little beard for your gnome. Another bonus to this is that you can glue it directly onto the Styrofoam ball instead of having to glue each piece individually. If you have more time or want a different look, there are other ideas that you can use listed below.
- Cut strips of yarn in various lengths and glue in place along the edge of the hat on the gnome.
- Add part of a mop head as the beard.
- Braid yarn into a viking style beard and attach.
- Use a fake costume wig cut into small pieces and glued into place.
- Glue on cotton balls or cotton batting.
How Can I Use This to Decorate?
I've been known to put a few gnomes around my garden, but this one isn't the type you want to add outdoors at risk of weather damage. Instead, I suggest using this inside on a variety of your fall and Thanksgiving or even Halloween decorations. So, get creative and add them to your home.
Prop them on a mantle or bookshelf as a cute little guardian to your space. Attach them to a wreath to hang on your front door. You can hang them from the ceiling if you wanted a fun little flying gnome to look around your house. Of course, my favorite is to add them to a centerpiece or similar display as a little life added to the decoration.
Supplies Needed
- Styrofoam ball
- Black felt
- Fake hair
- Wooden bead
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue stick or hot glue rope
How to Make a Gnome Decoration
On a piece of black felt trace a circle.
On the other side of the felt, draw a cone shape.
Cut out both pieces.
On the circle, add a bit of glue right in the center and place the styrofoam ball on top.
Add glue around the outside edges of the circle and then pull it up over the ball. It won't completely cover this but will be on most sides.
Add a bit of glue on one side with the open end facing up, and glue on the fake beard/hair.
Trim the widest end of the cone shape off into a single strip.
Add glue on the edge of the cone and roll together sealing in place.
Wrap the strip of felt around the bottom edge of the cone and glue in place to create a hat brim.
Glue the hat on top of the open end of the ball covering the Styrofoam and sealing up against the beard and rest of the felt.
Add a wooden bead just at the edge of the hat and beard for the nose.
Display with fall decor or as part of any of your home decor.
