Repurposing old tin cans is one of my favorite things to do. This rustic burlap and lace wrapped decorative storage can be just a regular old tin can that I was able to turn into not just something useful, but a beautiful storage can! If you have a few empty cans lying around, some scrap burlap, and a few embellishments, you can make one of your own in no time!
Rustic Decorative Storage Can
There are some items that I always seem to have around the house. One of those items are tin cans. Whether I am adding extra food to my pantry, or have washed and saved them for future projects, there is no doubt that tin cans are going to be somewhere in my home. Putting those to good use has become a hobby of mine. Since I love repurposing and upcycling, this is a perfect item to make use of!
This tin can was a nice short and fat can that I knew would be great for a place to store items. I love sketching and drawing, so often have pencils, charcoal, and pens on my desk. Turning this tin can into decorative storage can for storage was definitely a fun project. It can work for any number of purposes, but I love the addition of useful and beautiful on my desk.
How to Remove Sharp Edges from Tin Cans
One of the biggest dangers of working with upcycled tin cans is the sharp edges. Especially if you are making something that kids will be using or having your kids help you. Since this project is pretty simple, it could easily be one that kids help make. Keeping the can safe to use is a must.
The best method I have found to remove sharp edges has been to use a fine-grit sandpaper and simply run around the edges several times until they are smooth. This is something that will take a few extra minutes when making the storage can, but is worth it for safety.
Another option that I have seen others use, is to just add a layer of hot glue all around the top. This can be done with clear or decorative glitter glue as an added accent that also protects your hands.
You will also notice that I added a strip of ribbon on the top of this tin can. You can even fold the ribbon over the top and glue it both on the outside and the inside to add an extra layer of protection if desired.
What Glue Works Best on Tin Cans?
For this project, I am a big fan of hot glue. It just secures things easily and I don't have to use as much to keep the burlap in place. Other craft glues work well, but you may find you have to use more to keep all edges secure. For this reason, I prefer to use hot glue as I can add just a little dot along the edges and keep this in place easily. Test out different glues on different products and textures to make sure you have something that will always secure your crafts long term.
Supplies Needed
- Empty tin can
- Burlap (or lace covered burlap as shown)
- Lace
- Wide satin ribbon
- Thin satin ribbon
- Artificial flowers
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks or hot glue rope
How to Make a Decorative Storage Can
To begin, you will measure the length around your tin can, then measure and cut your burlap to fit. If you have a burlap lace combination, you will only need to cut once. For those using separate burlap and lace pieces, you will need to cut the burlap first, then lace to fit.
If you are using with separate burlap and lace, you will need to attach the lace to the middle of the burlap at this point.
Now, add glue to the edges of the burlap strip.
Place on the tin can and hold to secure.
Using the wide ribbon, measure and cut to fit around the top of the tin can above the burlap.
Glue the ribbon in place, and fold over the edge of the can if desired or needed to cover the sharp edge on the can.
Now, you will glue some artificial flowers in place around the top part of the can over the ribbon.
Using the small thin ribbon, create a small bow and glue in place on the center of the lace and burlap strip in the middle of the can.
Now you can use this as pencil storage, paper straw storage, or just decorative addition to any room.
Crafters Tips
When attaching lace to burlap, I recommend using Tacky Glue instead of hot glue. It leaves a cleaner look to the project, and will flatten down better.
Another thing to remember: Did you know that you can buy empty tin cans on Etsy? If you don't buy tinned foods, but still want to make this craft, you can purchase a box of emtpy tin cans from someone else. How brilliant!
