DIY Gingerbread House
A gingerbread house is an iconic image related to Christmas. Whether you are making homemade gingerbread houses, this gingerbread cookies pizza, or wanting a fun craft, this is a great fit.
I love that all it takes is a bit of paint and some glue to make this instead of baking skills and candy. It's better for my waistline and isn't dependant upon my baking skills!
I think this looks great on the mantle or even as a centerpiece next to my paper strip mini Christmas tree. You can even match the colors to each other.
Add in some of this 3-ingredient indoor snow around the decorations on the table and you'll have your own homemade unique winter village.
Can I Use This Clay Pot Gingerbread House as a Planter?
While I made this gingerbread house with the flower pot upside down, you can paint it the other way and still use it as a planter. I just like being able to make it look a bit like a regular house with it being wider on the bottom.
Additionally, I like having the hanger and bell on top if I want to add it as a decoration on the tree.
If you want a bit more of a rustic look to your decor, you can make this music sheet lantern to add to the mantle next to your gingerbread house.
They also look great alongside these clay pot reindeer Christmas decorations and this snowman out of a flower pot.
What Paint Works Best on Terra Cotta?
I have found that basic acrylic paints work best on terra cotta. For this project, I used white craft paint, and then acrylic markers to draw the details. I definitely recommend using an oil-based paint when working on a terra cotta flower pot.
If you use a plastic flower pot, you would use the same type of paint. It sticks well, doesn't fade easily, and won't melt off in rain or weather conditions.
Here are some more clay pot Christmas decorations that you'll love adding to your holiday or winter decor this year. So many fun ways to turn a flower pot into a beautiful decoration!

How to Make a Flower Pot Gingerbread House
Begin by painting the bottom of the pot with white paint. It's okay to let the paint drip down over the sides a bit as you will be making it into icicles later. You will then paint the bottom rim of the pot white.
Next, you will begin drawing on icicles with the white paint marker along the upper edge of the flower pot as shown.
Draw on a door, then decorate the pot using a variety of markers and colors.
I made red and green lollipops and added snowflakes.
When you have decorations in place that you like, let the paint dry, then cut a length of ribbon and tie a knot in it before slipping it through the hole on the "top" of the flower pot.
Hot glue a bell in place and display.
Display your gingerbread house craft on the mantle as desired.
