Colorful Pinecone Ornaments
Natural elements are almost always part of my inspiration when making crafts. Living in an area with lots of large pine trees, I always have an abundance of pinecones laying around to grab and use for crafts. These are just a simple but fun addition of color against a natural item to add to your tree.
This craft is ideal for making with kids since you aren't working with any hot glue. If you need more kids crafts, check out these classic toilet paper roll Christmas decorations for a tutorial on making a Santa, snowman, or elf.
I love pinecones in crafting. In fact, here is a list of 25 pinecone decorations for fall and winter, and I even have 10 more ways to transform pinecones into holiday decorations. As you can see, they are a huge part of decorating in my home, and I know you too will fall in love with them as part of your Christmas decor.
Variations for Pinecone Ornaments
I love using a variety of fun colors on my pinecones as shown. These are bright neon-colored pom poms and they just add a bit more pop of color to the tree.
You can, however, add any color them to your pinecone ornaments that you want. Below are a few ideas I think would be fun for these!
- School or college sports team colors
- Red and green
- Gold
- Silver
- Blue and silver
- Purple and white
- Glitter pom poms instead of solid
- Spray "snow" on the pine cones before adding the pom poms.
As you can see, there are a lot of fun options you can use to add uniqueness to your pinecone ornaments without adding a lot of expense to the craft.
I think this would also be a super fun ornament to have your Elf on the Shelf "make" while the kids are sleeping. Check out this list of Elf on the Shelf Ideas for more fun ways to add him or her to your routine this Christmas.
Ways to Display These Ornaments
Of course, the ornament is intended to go on your Christmas tree, but if you are like me, you have more ornaments than space on your tree. That's why I love having a few alternatives for displaying my creations.
For this pinecone ornaments idea, you could skip the ribbon hanger for the tree, and instead glue them onto a wreath form to create a fun colorful and natural-looking wreath to hang on a door.
They also look great in a large bowl with other holiday decors as a fun centerpiece.
Glue magnets to the back of some of them to create a rustic and colorful magnet for your refrigerator or add them as a decoration on top of presents this year. The possibilities are truly endless!
Supplies Needed

How to Make Pinecone Ornaments
For this ornament, you will need to gather or purchase as many pinecones as you want to make ornaments. If you are gathering them from your yard, make sure they are dry and that you have shaken them out to remove any loose bits or potential insects from outdoors.
Now, you will simply use your craft glue to attach pom poms all over the pinecones leaving small gaps between so it isn't crowded but does look full.
Attach a loop of twine to the top of the pinecone and secure with glue.
Once the glue has dried, you will use a simple ribbon or twine to create a small bow to glue on top of the pinecone with a piece of holiday greenery or an embellishment of choice.
Now you can hang your pom pom pinecone on the tree!
