Pom Pom Flowers
Making pom pom flowers is one of my favorite ways to use up scrap bits of yarn I have on hand. Sometimes, I buy yarn for a specific project, then end up with just a little bit left over. It's not enough to make another project, but it is enough to create these cute flowers. So, the result is this beautiful, colorful bouquet with different sizes of flowers, all made from yarn.
I have even collected bits of yarn long enough to make this yarn pom pom rug. It is a soft and cushy rug everyone will love standing on, and it is inexpensive for you to make!
What's the Best Yarn for Pom Pom Flowers?
This is what I absolutely love about this craft! You can use any type of yarn you want. I've even used the smallest threads to create little tiny flowers to attach to floral wire and mix in with bigger pom pom flowers.
I like using acrylic or synthetic fiber yarn for most of my projects as it is durable and inexpensive. If you are making something to gift, you can use 100% cotton or wool yarn instead depending on the project and individual allergies or needs.
How Should I Display These Yarn Flowers?
You can display these yarn flowers anywhere you would display regular flowers. I've made tons of diff4erent vases through the years that are ideal. I love this striped vase idea and the wine bottle homespun vase that you see in the pictures above. If you need more ideas, check out this list of vases for flowers that have tons of great ideas for homemade options you can add to your home.
You can even make these to go on packages instead of a bow, or as a boutonniere for a suit. You can see below how I used one as a book mark too! The possibilities for using these are endless.
Supplies Needed
- Yarn in a variety of colors
- Floral wire
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun and glue
How to Make Pom Pom Flowers
To begin, gather up your floral wire, yarn pieces, and scissors. You may need a hot glue gun and glue for this craft to secure the pom pom to the floral wire, but it depends on what type of wire you are using.
To make the pom pom flower, you will take one end of the yarn and begin wrapping it around the palm of your hand. Wrap several times for a larger flower or just a few times for a small flower.
Once you have gotten the size you want, you will clip the end of the yarn and pull it off of your hand while still keeping it together.
Cut another small piece of yarn and tie it around the middle of the yarn bundle.
Next, you will cut the ends of the sides so and begin fluffing the balls of yarn to look more like flowers.
To finish the pom pom flower, you will attach it to green floral wire. Use floral tape to attach to the flower, and/or hot glue if needed.
Display in a vase or basket.
