Yarn crafts are some of my favorites to make. This pumpkin garland made from yarn is a great way to use up scrap yarn and create a fun way to add decor to your home or yard during the cooler fall season. One of my favorite things about this project is how I can have the kids help me with wrapping the yarn to create the pumpkins. How cute is this going to turn out?!

What kind of yarn should I use for a yarn pumpkin?
For a project like this, I recommend using a synthetic blend of yarn. Your basic polyester, nylon, or rayon blend is ideal. However, if you prefer more natural products, a good cotton yarn may be a good fit for this project. You want to use a yarn that has some strength and can hold the shape of the pumpkin but is also affordable. That's why a synthetic blend is typically going to be my choice.
Tip: Choose 2-3 different shades of orange or yellow for this project. Since not all pumpkins are the exact shade of orange, you can make it even more natural and unique by adding a variety of yarn colors to your project!
Is this safe to hang outside?
While this can be hung outside on your porch or on a tree, it is not going to be good to leave outside in rainy weather. It will cause the yarn to droop and not look as nice if it gets overly wet. So, if you want to hang it outside, do so only in good weather, or only underneath your porch awning or inside a lawn gazebo.

How to make a yarn pumpkin garland
Begin by gathering your supplies. You will need a significant amount of yarn for this project if you want to make a longer garland. I am using just orange, but as mentioned above, you can easily use multiple colors of yarn for this DIY fall decor project.
Start by taking one end of the yarn, and wrapping around your arm multiple times. You are using your arm to create a circle of yarn. Continue this until you think the yarn is big enough for your pumpkin.
Clip the ending of the yarn, and then pull the circle of yarn off your arm.
Once you have the circle of yarn, you will want to use another small piece of yarn to tie in the middle of the bundle of yarn to create the pumpkin.
Once you have as many pumpkins as you want to create, you will start decorating them.
Attach felt leaves and use the pipe cleaners to create a stem. These will be attached with hot glue.
Finally, you will tie each pumpkin to the thread a few inches apart until you have the garland at a length you want for displaying.
Attach to surfaces by tying the ends or using a tack to securesizes
