How to Make Butterflies from an Old Book

This is a fast and easy old book craft. You only need a few pages to make a number of butterflies. How many you make is up to you. You can make them all the same size, as I did, or you can make them in a variety of sizes.

What You Need for this Old Book Paper Craft

To make this rustic paper craft, you just need a few basic supplies. You'll need a pair of scissors, some hot glue and a glue gun. You'll require some twine and an old book that you are willing to cut up.

You will need a couple of other things as well. In order to create the shapes of butterflies on the pages to cut out, you will need butterfly stencils of some variety. If you want to reproduce the results of this craft closely, you will need the same shape of stencil in two different sizes, one slightly smaller than the other.

You will also need keys, which will serve as the bodies of your butterflies. You can use any type of keys that you want, but you will achieve the best rustic effect if you go with vintage skeleton keys. If you do not have any of these, you can purchase them by the lot online.

What to Do With Butterflies from an Old Book

After you complete this craft, you can hang up your butterflies anywhere you please. You can put them against a wall or simply hang them from the ceiling anywhere in a room.

DIY Rustic Butterfly Decoration from an Old Book

Materials

• Old book
• Butterfly stencil
• Keys
• Twine or other rustic string

Tools

• Hot glue and glue gun
• Scissors

Instructions

1. Begin by cutting out your butterfly stencils in two different sizes so that you can trace around them. If you don't have any download our free butterfly template here.
2. Tear out a few pages from an old book to work with. How many you need depends on how many butterflies you plan to make.
3. For each butterfly, trace around both the large stencil and the small one on the book page so that you have two butterfly shapes in two different sizes.
4. Cut out the butterfly shapes from the old book pages.
5. Apply hot glue to the top of one of the larger butterfly shapes, and then attach the smaller butterfly shape on top of it. This becomes a single butterfly with more of a “3D” effect than it would have if we’d simply used one shape to create it. Do this step repeatedly to create as many butterflies as you want.
6. Apply hot glue to one of the keys, and then attach that to one of the paper butterflies.
7. Rinse and repeat to create as many butterflies as you want.
8. Run some twine through the hole at the top of the key so that you can hang up the rustic butterfly decoration. Again, do this with all of the old book butterflies you have created.
9. You can now hang your rustic old book butterfly decorations anywhere!
