Clocks and timepieces are traditionally seen as symbols of industry. More than any other item of technology, they represent the transition we made away from nature and toward machines. So I was totally floored when I found a very cool woodworking project recently which reunites nature with mechanics.
Rustic decorating is in right now. That is why we feature so many rustic décor projects on our site—like this list over here.
Actually, one of the most exciting rustic décor lists we have compiled is this one of log projects. These projects go a step further than many others in that they have a very unfinished look to them. Their charm isn’t just old-fashioned, it is organic, natural—a bit of the outdoors brought indoors.
I love décor like this, but it has been a while since I stumbled into a similar project which I can share with you all. But I just found one!

This video teaches you how you can craft a working clock using a cross section of a wood stump. The natural edges are left intact. The design is very clever, and the finished result is nothing short of stunning.
This project really astounds me because it is so unexpected. Clocks are very much symbols of our transition away from nature and toward mechanics. So seeing a clock which brings us back to nature by bringing nature indoors is quite cool!
It looks like this project requires a lot of precision. But if you have the woodworking skill and the patience, it should not be too hard to replicate using the video tutorial. I may just have to give this one a try! If you decide to create your own natural edge clock, be sure to show us the result!
