If you need a simple style that is also elegant, this is the one for you. A twisted braid bun is an ideal updo for any day or event. It can be a casual look, a professional style at work, or can take you right to a wedding or event. This is even nice enough to wear for prom!
Twisted Braid Bun
This look combines two of my go-to hairstyles. You have a super easy twiste3d braid, and a simple bun. The two together create an elegant look that is ideal for everyday wear but can also be used as an event hairstyle easily.
I love braids, and I love keeping my hair up and away from my face, but I get tired of the same looks. If you too struggle with being bored with your hairstyles, check out this list of waterfall braid ideas. You might also like these great 5-minute hairstyles for a fun change to your routine.
What Tools Are Needed To Create a Braid Bun Updo?
This is super easy and you only need your brush, some hair ties, and some bobby pins. All of these things you probably carry in your bag day to day. That means this look can be pulled together at the last minute no matter where you are.

This style doesn't require much, but I do like to share a few of my favorite tools with you. Below are some products and tools that make it easier to always have my long hair styled and ready to go. Check them out and add the ones you like to your own hairstyling routine.

Twisted Braid Bun Tutorial
Before you begin putting your hair up in this cute bun updo, you need to make sure you have combed it out and removed any tangles. Since this doesn't require a part, you can just comb all the hair back.
I love that this style works on any texture of hair, in both medium-length and longer lengths. While it isn't great for most short styles, it can work for shoulder-length hair.
This braided bun can be created with both clean and dirty hair. Slightly dirty hair tends to hold styles longer and is less likely to have flyaways.
Step 1
Comb hair and pull it back into a high ponytail. Brush or comb through the sides, top, and bottom, to give a smooth look all around.
Secure with an elastic hair band tightly against the crown of your head. You want this to stay in place and not pull down with the weight of your hair later.
Step 2
Divide this ponytail into two equal sections of hair. You will be braiding one section and creating a twisted rope braid on the other.
Step 3
Take one of the sections, and begin twisting and wrapping it around itself. This rope braid is easiest to do when you twist first the individual sections, then wrap from the right to left, pull under, and twist again.
Continue the process to the end, then secure the bottom of the braid with a hair tie.
Step 4
On the second portion of hair, create a traditional 3-strand braid starting at the base of the ponytail holder and ending at the bottom of the length of hair. This can be as tight or as loose as you prefer, but a tighter braid looks sleeker in this style.
Secure the end with a hair tie.
Step 5
Now, you will create the bun, by starting with the rope twist braid. Wrap it around the ponytail holder against your head, putting it underneath the braided section as you wrap around the base.
Using bobby pins, secure this to your head with a few on each side. I also like to add a hairpin through the original ponytail holder along with the ones around the edges.
Step 6
Now, you will finish the bun by wrapping the braided section around the rest of the bun and keeping it close to your head.
Secure the ends into place with bobby pins and add additional pins around the outside of the bun to hold it in place securely.
How Can I Keep Twisted Braids Secure?
One of the biggest questions regarding a twisted or rope braid is how to keep the braid secure. Since you are typically using just two strands and wrapping them around each other, you may be afraid that they will come unraveled as soon as out ie off the ends. Below are tips for making a rope braid stay together.
- It's not just twisting two sections of hair together, but twisting each, then twisting them together. For every twist, you will twist both sections of the hair, then wrap them around each other.
- Twist the hair upwards, then over each other. It creates a type of knot that secures but is easy to unravel later.
- If your twist still isn't solid, just work fast and carefully to put it into place as a bun. Add extra pins around the edges to keep the look and twist in place.
Why Use Two Different Braid Styles?
You can use both twisted or traditional 3-strand braids. However, I love the mixture because the twist adds a bit of volume to the base for the traditional braid to wrap around.
If you prefer, you can easily use both as twisted or both as traditional braids with just a beautiful result.
