Do I Have to Use Clothespins?

If you wanted to use something else rather than clothespins, you can. However, you need to make sure to use something that can be attached to the string. You can use craft sticks as the base of the Christmas trees. The craft sticks can then be glued to the string to keep them in place.

Whatever you use for the base of the trees, make sure that it is sturdy and will be able to hold the tree in place. You also want to make sure it can easily be attached to the string. Twigs, craft sticks, dowels, etc are all excellent options to substitute for this.

What is the Best Paper For Making the Trees?

I really like using foam paper for the trees because it holds up the best because it is sturdy. There are other great options below that can be used for making these trees.

Just remember if you want it to be stiff like these, you may need to add some starch, Mod Podge, or even just layer the paper together to make it thicker. You want your trees to stand up straight and not have floppy branches.

Can I Add Ornaments to the Trees?

You can absolutely add ornaments or decorations to the trees themselves! How adorable will it look with little ornaments attached to the trees?

Add things like miniature bells, miniature ornaments, rhinestones, sequins, beads, or bits of sparkly pipe cleaner to the "branches" for them to look more like a real tree. Of course, if you are using plain paper, you might also want to spray with glitter spray or add glitter around the edges if you prefer.

This is a great way to add a bit more bling and shine to your Christmas trees. You can make each tree the same or add something a little different to each tree.

How to Make a Clothespin Garland for Christmas

Measure a length of glittery thread to fit your mantle or doorway then cut it and string it through the end of the upholstery needle.

Using the needle, string the pom poms onto the thread leaving 3" to 4" between each pom pom then set it aside.

On the back of the lightest color of foam paper, trace a small triangle shape. Cut this out.

Lay the triangle of the next shade of foam paper, and use the bottom as a base to guide you to trace down a bit on each side at an angle to look like the middle of the tree. Cut out this angled strip of paper.

Next, repeat this process to form the base of your tree. Cut it out and set it aside.

Glue the pieces onto each clothespin, leaving a small gap between each strip of foam paper to create the layered tree look.

Lay out the string you made with pom poms and clip the trees between each pom pom.

Hang on your mantle, doorway, or wall!
