One of my favorite things to do is make ornaments with the kids. This pipe cleaner holly wreath ornament is a classic option that every preschooler has made at one point or another. It's fun, cheap, easy, and classic. What better way to celebrate the holidays than making this with your kids, of all ages?
Pipe Cleaner Holly Wreath Ornament
If your budget is tight or you just want something easy to make with the kids, then this is the one to choose. It's a simple afternoon craft that's great for winter break or use in a classroom full of kids filled with energy and ready for their holiday. Make them in classic green or any fun color kids choose and add them to holiday trees, gifts, or with a pin on their shirt.
If you want something else to make the kids, this DIY pom pom Christmas ball ornament is a great option that's fast and easy. Another idea would be to make one of these cute toilet paper roll Christmas ornaments or even the craft stick Christmas ornaments!
What Can I Use to Decorate My Wreath?
There are many ways to decorate the wreath. Since this is a simple ornament, it's perfect for letting your kids use their imagination to create something unique to them. That means you give them options and different items they can add, and don't make it a specific look. Below are some ideas that work great for this ornament.
- Spray with glitter or use glitter glue on various points to make it shine.
- Use different colors of pipe cleaners and ribbon for unique looks.
- Add miniature ornaments you buy from the miniature craft area of your local craft stores.
- Weave ribbon between the spaces between the pipe cleaner.
- Add tinsel around the wreath.
- Spray with fake snow or glue on fake snow pieces.
What Can Be Used to Hang This Wreath?
I added a length of ribbon through the middle of the wreath that is ideal for hanging it from the tree. You can skip this step and use a traditional ornament hook or even use something like a paper clip. Of course, I love the idea of just using ribbon, twine, yarn, rope, or raffia so it has that rustic look. You could even add another different or same colored pipe cleaner to it as a hanger if you wanted. There are many possibilities that work great with this project.
What Glue Should I Use When Making These With Kids?
Hot glue is my go-to for most crafts, but especially when I want something to stay secure. This isn't any different, however, if you are making it with kids it is important to use something safe. Non-toxic glue is a must. Traditional kid's school glue like Elmer's glue might work, but it would take a bit more and would need a longer drying time. I like the tacky glue options that are non-toxic because they tend to stick better and hold longer.
What Can These Be Used For?
Obviously, they are a great Christmas tree ornament, but that's not all. These are a fun option to decorate a gift with. You can glue or tape them on top of a package and it adds a whole new look.
Another option is that you can put them onto a wreath you hang outside so it's a sort of wreath inception. A fun and unique addition! Or you can add a safety pin to the back of it and wear it as a pin or let kids wear them on their jackets.
My favorite idea if not hanging on a tree though, is to attach them to twine a few inches apart and turn them into a garland to hang on your mantle! This is especially fun if you use a few different colors of pipe cleaners to add to them.

How to Make a Pipe Cleaner Wreath Ornament
Wrap a pipe cleaner around a pen or pencil to create a "spring". Repeat these 4 to 5 times to create enough for a wreath shape.
Attach the ends of each spring together using hot glue. Form into a circle.
Cut a length of ribbon and loop over the wreath and through it then tie the end to create a hanging loop.
Create a bow out of the Christmas ribbon and glue it onto the top of the wreath where the hanging ribbon is located.
Glue miniature bells around the wreath at intervals.
Attach pom poms in between the bells.
Add additional embellishments or glitter then hang on your holiday tree!
