The base of the candle holder is a circle made from cardboard. I find that with so many packages coming into the house during the holidays, I always have scrap pieces laying around for things like this.

If you don't have any on hand, you can actually use anything that is sturdy like cardboard. It doesn't have to be as sturdy as wood or hard plastic, although it could be, you just need it to hold in place and keep the centerpiece together. The sturdier the base of the centerpiece, the easier it is to move from one place to another. This also makes it easier for storage.

Should I Clean The Pinecones Before Using Them?

You should always clean the pinecones first unless they are store-bought and even then, it isn't a bad idea. Between the dirt and grime that can be on the pinecones that are found outside, you never know if a bug or two has found its way into the pinecone. This might be a rustic design, but I don't think you want any little critters crawling out of it.

How Do I Clean the Pinecones?

I typically fill a bucket with hot water and a cap of bleach then put the pinecones in, cover, and let it sit for 30-minutes. Then you dump off the water and spray down the pinecones well to remove any residual bleach and insects. If you prefer to not use bleach, you can do the same with ¼ vinegar to 1 gallon of water. There are also many chemical insect killers that would potentially work for this.

Can I Use Something Other Than Twine on The Base?

I love using twine in crafts like these because of the look and feel it adds to the craft. It gives it that rustic feel. However, there are a lot of other options you can use to create the rustic candle holder. Below are a few that come to mind.

Any thin style rope will work. You want to avoid rope that is too thick because you might have trouble getting it to turn and stay around the center of the centerpiece.
You can use ribbon in brown or tan if you want to stay rustic, or you can add any holiday-themed ribbon.
Raffia is another great option that is rustic and easy to find inexpensively.
Wrapping the base in fabric or felt is also a good idea, that can be a great way to repurpose torn shirts or scrap fabric.
Scrapbook paper, gift wrap, or tissue paper are possibilities but won't be as durable with the pinecones on top.

How to Make a Rustic Candle Holder for Christmas

If using plain pinecones, spray some of them with fake snow and set them aside to dry.

Using something round, trace a large 8" to 10" circle onto cardboard.

Cut out the circle of cardboard.

Using hot glue, attach the rope to the top of the cardboard starting on the outside and winding around and inward gluing every few inches to secure.

Place a candle in the center as a guide, and begin gluing pinecones around it to create a center opening to place the candle later.

Go back and forth placing the pinecones on their sides, straight up, or at angles. Also use different sizes, shapes, and ones that have been painted as well as plain pinecones to give it a unique look.

Once the pinecones have been attached in a circle, cut a star shape from a piece of bark, wood, or cardboard.

Glue the star onto the front of some of the pinecones.

Add greenery around the piece underneath the pinecones at random places.

Next, glue a few of the blue beads onto the pinecones randomly for sparkle.

You can also add smaller pieces of pinecones, acorns, maple gumballs, and similar rustic natural items in empty spaces.

Paint the star blue or white.

Add bits of blue or white paint on the pinecones that are plain until happy with the look.

Display with a candle in the center, but be careful when burning a candle to make sure none of the natural elements catch fire.
