Apples make for a tasty and healthy snack – you can set them out with cheese (the combination of sweet and salty is always a winner), enjoy them in a fruit salad, or, my favorite, enjoy them with some peanut butter (don’t knock it until you try it!). What you may not know, though, is that you’ve been slicing your apples the long way all these years.
These five apple slicing hacks are going to open up a whole new world for you apple-lovers, with quicker and more effective slicing, and prolonged freshness, too.

1. Turn it Upside-Down
I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I’ve never actually thought of tuning my apple upside-down before slicing it. It seems like such an obvious thing to do since the top part has a wider surface area, thus giving you a sturdier fruit to work with (and a minimized rick of injury).
2. Cut a Grid
For some reason it’s been ingrained in our heads that we should cut apples in quarters, but if you cut it like a tic-tac-toe grid with the center square over the core, you get perfect slices and remove the core cleanly just like that! This way is actually also a lot quicker than the usual way.
3. Rubber Band it to Keep it Fresh
Another really cool feature about this revolutionary apple slicing method is that you can keep the pieces together to make the apple stay fresh for longer. If you want to take an apple for lunch, simply snap a rubber band over it to keep it whole – it should stay good for a couple of hours.
4. Make them Look Fancy
Six diagonal slits in each corner slice of the apple gives you a quick and pretty way to display your apple slices if you’re trying to impress any of your guests. As the saying goes, we eat with our eyes.
5. Lemon Juice for Freshness
If you find that you’ve cut too many apples and want to keep some slices to eat later, here’s an easy trick to keep them all from browning and spoiling within what seems like minutes. A spritz of lemon juice it all you need. If you have a whole apple, spray the slices with lemon and keep them together like in #3, they’ll still be fine to eat even after eight and a half hours!
