What Type of Books Can I Do This With?
While you can do this with many books, the best kind are those with a flat surface that is paper or fabric. Leather journals are not recommended nor are ones with texture as it can be a bit harder to adhere to the book. Below are some ideas that can be great for this message.
- Cloth-covered notebooks.
- Journals with elastic-band closures.
- DIY cookbooks.
- Sketchbooks.
- Devotional study books.
- Photo albums.
- Scrapbooks.
- Plastic or fabric book covers.
- Book bags or tote bags.
- Bullet journals.
- Day planners.
No matter what you choose to put these messages on, your mom is sure to love them.
What Type of Vinyl Should I Use For This?
You can use any permanent adhesive vinyl for your message. In the options pictured, foil vinyl was used for a bit of an extra look that sparkles and shines. If you prefer the matte look or simple gloss, just choose a more traditional vinyl.
This is not a project where using heat transfer vinyl is necessary. However, if you are making a book bag or book pouch that may need to be laundered, then definitely opt for the heat transfer vinyl option so it lasts longer through washing and drying.
Are There Special Things Needed to Attach Vinyl to Books?
For most of the suggested items to apply these messages onto, you need nothing more than the basic supplies below. If you plan to put this onto a cloth or a tote bag, then you may need a clothes iron and waxed paper or a heat press to seal the HTV onto the item.
How Do You Gift a Journal or Notebook?
Once you have created your journal or notebook, how should you give it to your mom? For these ideas, I am going to focus just on the fun ways to gift a journal or notebook and not the other ideas mentioned above.
- Write a special message inside of the cover with the date and your name.
- Wrap or place in a gift basket alongside a special pen to use with the journal.
- If they are artistic and will use it for sketching, gift along with charcoals, pencils, or similar options.
- Gift with a list of journal prompts. a devotional book or self-help book alongside the journal for them to use for inspiration.
Can I Change the File to Say Mom Instead of Mum?
You'll notice on these that the term, "mum" was used in place of mom. Depending upon where you are from and your own family dynamic, you may call your mother, mom, mum, mommy, mama, or any number of other versions. Since these files are actually within the Cricut Design Space, it is very simple to edit the wording to suit your needs or what you call your mom.

How to Make a Mother's Day Journal Using Your Cricut
Load the "Wife Mum Boss" design into the Cricut Design space and choose to continue at the bottom of the screen.
When the design loads and connects to your machine, choose the material you will be using from the options on the screen.
This shows choosing adhesive foil for this project.
Place the purple adhesive foil onto the standard grip mat.
Follow the prompts on the screen to load the mat into the Cricut machine so it touches the rollers. Then push the button for it to feed into the unit. Press start, and let the message cut.
Once the message has been cut out of the foil, remove the excess foil from the top.
Use your weeding tool to remove any additional small pieces left around the letters or designs.
Place a small piece of transfer tape over the foil message and press down with the scraper tool to attach the vinyl to the transfer tape.
Gently peel the transfer tape up so that the vinyl stays on it and leaves just the plain backing on the mat.
Position the message on the journal or book where you want it to be, then press it down gently and evenly.
Use the scraper tool to make sure the vinyl is pressed firmly onto the book.
Peel off the transfer tape leaving just the vinyl behind on the book.
For the simple Mother's Day message, follow the same process using matte vinyl instead of foil.
Add it to the bottom edge of the book, making sure the elastic strap won't cover the message.
For the "mum's things to do" message, follow the same process using the gold foil.
Add to the center of the book or planner.
Make sure to write a special message on the inside of the book or journal for your mother to treasure for years to come.
