Pom Pom Ball Christmas Ornament
As a kid, I made these at church as a fun craft after Sunday school. Ever since then, they have been a favorite on my holiday tree, and this year I can continue the tradition with my kids. You can easily make these with any color of pom pom you prefer, but mostly, you'll want to just have tons of fun. They hang on the tree easily, or even on a doorway, arch, or just from light in your home. So many cute ideas for adding this to your holiday decor!
If you are making ornaments with your kids, then you might also want to add this adorable Christmas pom pom tree ornament or even this cute little shiny Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer ornament to your list of projects. Both are adorable and super easy for kids to help you make.
Ways to Customize This Kids Craft Ornament
There are so many ways to make these ornaments unique. I like getting creative when making items for my own tree, but this project is extra fun because I can make it unique with my kids! Below are some ideas I love for turning this ornament into your own unique style.
- Change up the size of the styrofoam ball you use as the base so the ornaments are bigger or smaller.
- Use all one color pom pom on this instead of a variety of red, green, and white.
- Add silver and gold pom poms onto the ornament to create an upscale look.
- Spray with glitter spray or adhesive spray and sprinkle with glitter.
- Add on monogram letters or other elements to customize for the individual.
- Use twine or yarn for the hanger instead of ribbon.
You can also add these cute colorful Christmas piencone ornaments, pom pom gnome ornaments, or even this adorable little cinnamon stick reindeer ornaments idea all using leftover pom poms.
Can I Make This With Homemade Pom Poms?
If you have extra time and want to go the extra mile, you can definitely make your own homemade pom poms. For pom poms that size, I would recommend making them around just 1-2 fingers rather than the palm of your hand. Wrap about 10 times around 2 fingers, then add a piece of yarn around the middle to tie and cut through the sides to fluff.
While I love making my own pom poms for other projects, this is one where I feel like the purchased pom poms just make more sense. They are fast, easy, cheap, and already come in tons of colors. Especially these sparkly ones used in this project.
How Can I Attach the Pom Poms?
I used my favorite, hot glue, to attach the pom poms to the Styrofoam ball. You can use glue or straight pins for this, but glue is the easiest and works the best. Of course, when working with kids, you may not want to use hot glue for safety reasons. In that case, there are other great ideas for gluing these onto the ball.
I reach for tacky craft glue or even basic school glue (Elmer's) when I work with kids. E6000 is another good craft glue choice that works well and holds for a long time. If you aren't sure if the glue you choose will hold, do a test project before making these with your kids.
