Tricycle Diaper Cake Tutorial
Diaper cakes create such a fun baby shower gift. They can also be used as a welcome home gift. Parents will love the diapers and little trinkets that are added using this diaper cake tutorial. I love that you can make so many unique things with simple supplies. This one is super cute and really easy to make fit any baby nursery theme. If you like this idea, you might also like the crane diaper cake or the diaper bathtub baby shower gift. Both are super cute ideas!
One thing I love about the tricycle is that it is versatile for boys or girls. If having twins, you could even make matching ones or two in different colors. These are always a cute idea and everyone loves seeing them on the baby shower gift table.
Can I Add More Decorations to This?
I love diaper cakes because they are so much fun to decorate! You can do so many different things to them that will look great and easily match a theme for the party. Below are a few of my favorite ideas.
- Add ribbons and lace in different colors, patterns, and textures. Curl the ribbons on the end or secure flat against the diapers.
- Use balloons with helium to tie on the back or on the handlebars. If you want to go smaller, pick up the small balloons on sticks, and tuck them into the edge of the handlebar instead.
- Wrap a stuffed animal around the center of the "bike" to "ride" it on the table.
- Use colors for different motorcycle themes or even orange and black for Harley Davidson theme.
- Of course, you can even wrap the individual "tires" in tissue paper. This would make it easy to hide the diapers and give a new theme.
How Many Diapers do I Need to Make This?
The number of diapers used really depends upon what size you are using. With newborn diapers, you will probably need 40-50 diapers. They are so small that it will take more to create the large wheels you are making. If you used a larger diaper it could be as few as 15-20 diapers.
I recommend using 2 different sizes of diapers so you are giving the new parents a variety they can use for their baby. Often, newborn and smallest sizes are gifted to new parents. That means a larger size, perhaps even toddler sizes, would be great for them to have on hand later down the road. This also makes the gift useful for a longer time as a decoration in their nursery.

How to Make a Tricycle Diaper Cake
Choose a round template to stack your diapers in while you roll them. I used a 12" skillet but you can use a plate, bowl, or just do this freehand.
Roll one diaper completely, then begin wrapping additional diapers around it.
I used 10 diapers per "wheel", but this depends upon how large you want the bike and what size diaper you are using.
Secure these with a rubber band around the center.
Repeat this two more times until you have 3 large wheels of diapers.
Wrap each diaper wheel first with a white ribbon around the middle gluing or stapling together in place.
Then attach a thin purple ribbon around the center of the white ribbon and secure with glue.
Next, fold a large piece of thin fabric, ribbon, or tissue paper and cut it into a length that is around 5 feet long. You want this strip of material or paper to be about 3" wide.
Push the end of this through the middle of one diaper, then the second so the two are combined.
Pull the fabric or paper through so it is even on both sides.
Place the third wheel in front to form the tricycle look.
Pull the white tissue paper through the back two wheels until it's evenly distributed on both sides. Now, pull the two ends of the paper through opposite sides of the final roll of diapers so you have a length of tissue on either side.
Bring the paper up and over the top of this wheel of diapers and wrap a rubber band around it and then staple together so you have a "handle" of sorts going upward.
Fold the two sides over and secure on either side and then staple back onto each other to create two handlebars.
Attach a thin purple ribbon in a spiral around each handlebar and secure with glue or staples.
Roll the ends of the paper under to make it look more like a traditional handlebar.
Use additional white and purple ribbon to create a bow and attach it to the very front of the handlebar.
Display on the baby shower gift table or wrap and gift at your next baby shower.
