Halloween and witches go hand in hand! You can't have a spooky October without at least a few witch decorations around the house. This year, you can add this super cute and easy DIY witches broom to your Halloween decorations. I made this in just a few minutes and it is perfect to go along with some of our other fun decorations. Plus, it's kid-friendly and costs practically nothing!
DIY Witches Broom Halloween Decoration
If you prefer things a bit more fun and less spooky, this is one of those crafts that can go either way. That's part of why I love it so much. Depending on where and how you hang it, it could turn from simple and cut to scary. So, it's ideal for making with kids!
Witches are typically seen with orange, black, green, or purple, so I added purple yarn for my broom. You could use any color and make this match other witch decorations you already have on hand if needed.
If you want more fun witch themed projects to add to your Halloween decorations make sure you check out this old book floating witch with broom decoration. It's absolutely stunning! If you have kids underfoot, you might want to make this paper plate witch or this cute witch hat decoration.
What Can I Use for the Broom Handle?
My favorite craft supplies are free craft supplies! I should probably put that saying on a shirt somewhere! Since I love upcycling and using items I have on hand, what better way to make a broom handle than to grab a stick from my back yard. I am lucky to live in Michigan where we have multiple trees on our property so things like this are always handy. If you don't have access to a tree branch, below are some ideas that could also work for a witch's broom project.
- Dowels
- Yardsticks
- Cardboard
- Actual broomsticks
- Strips of plywood or boards
Variations for Decorating Your Witches Broom
I made this super basic because that's easy for anyone to do on a budget. That doesn't mean you can't really glam it up and turn it into something spectacular on your door or in your home. When I am working with Halloween decorations, I often think about how to make it less spooky or how to amp up the scare factor. Below are some ideas that could really make your witches broom look amazing and unique!
- Add large googly eyes to the yarn head to give your broom life.
- Use tinsel or sparkly yarn to make it sparkle.
- Paint the stick all black, brown, or another fun color for Halloween.
- Add some glitter. Glitter makes everything better!
- Glue on crumbled pieces of paper randomly along the edge of the stick then spray paint over it so they look like warts. Witches have warts, how about their brooms?
How Can I Use This as Halloween Decor?
I like the idea of sitting this on top of a few hooks just outside my front door along with a wooden witch I have there. You can, however, put it anywhere in your home or outside your home as part of your Halloween decorations.
Lean it against the mantle, park it by your front door with the coat rack or umbrellas, or even prop against a tree in your front yard. Mount it on a hook or string it from a tree as if it is flying through your yard. There are tons of ways to use this in your home decor this Halloween. Just use your imaginations!
Supplies Needed
How to Make a DIY Witches Broom
Using a small box or book as a surface, wrap yarn around it about 30 times to create a large pom pom base for your yarn head.
Once you have it wrapped, cut the end of the yarn then feed it through the loop underneath the yarn at the top and tie into a knot to secure the loops of yarn together at one end.
Cut through the bottom end opposite where you tied it.
Once the yarn is cut free, you will have two sides of loose yarn with a tie in the center.
Lay the end of the stick at the top of the yarn where it is tied and then push into the yarn so the end of the stick is slightly covered. Arrange the yarn to cover the stick.
Cut a length of yarn and tie around the stick so that the yarn is covering it and it is secure similar to how a mop head would be tied around the end of a handle.
Wrap the yarn around several times to make sure it will stay in place then tie a knot to secure.
Starting just above the yarn, wrap more yarn around the branch going back and forth in a pattern or simply spiraled around the branch as desired.
Trim the ends of the yarn so they are even.
Add additional embellishments or decorations if desired then display!
