It’s a relatively easy project if you know how to use essential tools and you can make the entire bed, ladder included, for less than $150. Video Game Storage
For Wii games, CDs, DVDs and other disc type games, you can build a great storage unit for them that is hidden away, out of sight. You’ll need a mat board, some vinyl, double backed tape, fabric, and a few other key supplies. The storage is hidden on the inside of a cabinet or entertainment center door so you never see it unless it’s open. By creating individual holders, you can keep games and other discs safe while still having a great place to keep them all organized. Plus, this project takes just a couple of hours and if you have a few supplies on hand, it won’t cost much if anything at all.

Vintage Crates
You can create adorable storage carts from old pallets. If you have a lumber yard or similar business near you, you may be able to get the pallets for nothing so the cost of this one is very little. It may take a couple of hours but you’ll end up with wonderful toy boxes or storage containers for blankets or anything else the kids have thrown around in their rooms. Plus, you can add wheels to the bottom so you can easily move the crates around, which makes picking up toys after playtime really fun.

Clear Toy Storage Bags
These bags are so neat and they are really easy to make. They have a drawstring closure and they are completely see-thru so kids can tell which toys go into which bag. You’ll need some fabric, thick clear vinyl, a drawstring cord and fusible interfacing. You have to sew a little but the great thing is that you can make as many bags as you need and you can do them in a bunch of different sizes so they’re perfect for every single toy. The bags make it really easy to move toys from one room to another or for outside play as well.

Organized Lego Storage
Ah, Legos. Every little boy loves Legos. Moms however, not so much, especially when those Legos end up all over the floor. If you’ve ever stepped on one of those little buggers barefoot then you know just how great this Lego storage project is. If your little one (or your big one) has a lot of Legos, this project helps you to organize them by color so they always know where each color that they need is located. Plus, it keeps them all neatly put away so that they’re not attacking your bare feet when you least expect it.

Stuffed Animal Swing
Hanging storage for stuffed animals is great but those nets that you stick up in the corner can be a little boring. They can also look very untidy when they are stuffed to the gills with animals. This swing is a much neater idea and one that is so easy to make you’ll probably want a couple, especially if you have loads of stuffed animals to put away. You need a bit of hobby wood, a clothesline, and some hooks. You simply create swings for all of the animals to sit on and then hang on the wall or from the ceiling.

Tube Cubbies
Oh how we absolutely adore projects that are free. These tube cubbies are made from empty toilet paper rolls so they don’t cost anything – aside from the initial toilet paper purchase, that is. You simply put them together and create a little garage for all of those Matchbox cars. For girls, you could use these to store Barbie dolls or any number of other little toys. Just glue the tubes together and then place the “garage” on a dresser when finished. He will have a blast putting his cars away in his little tube garage.

Quick and Easy Book Storage
If your kids have quite a few books and you don’t really have anywhere to store them, this book storage project is perfect. You just need a few Ikea spice racks, which are around $4 each. Or, you could use cheaper spice racks if you can find them. Just put the spice racks up on the wall or a door, wherever the little ones can reach them and add the books. Crafty Canisters
Old coffee cans (well, they’re not really cans so much as plastic containers now) make wonderful canisters. You can store things like crayons, Matchbox cars, doll clothes, and just any number of smaller items in them and completely organize playrooms and bedrooms. The great part about this project is you can print off labels to go on the coffee cans so kids will be able to remember where everything goes. And, don’t worry that your little ones aren’t reading yet. The labels that you use are actually pictures of what goes into each can. This is a great organizing idea and a wonderful learning tool for toddlers.

Stuffed Animal Cage
Instead of sitting those stuffed animals on the bed or piling them up in the closet, make their own little zoo cage and keep them organized. This is such a neat project and one that really won’t take much time. Plus, the animals easily go in and out of the cage so the little ones can play with them all they want and then just stick them back into their cage with they are finished. The gist of the project is to take a cheap $15 bookcase unit and turn it into a cage by using bungee cords. You just have to drill holes in the case to hold the cords and they’ll perfectly keep those animals in line.

We just can’t say enough about these little plastic bins, which are perfect for organizing outdoor toys in the garage. Not only are the colorful, they’re stackable so you can use as many or as few as you need. Plus, they’re small enough so you can fit them into the garage without them getting in the way of the garage door or cars. And, there are no lids or metal parts that kids could get hurt on. You don’t do anything but stack them wherever you need them and then fill with toys. This is probably one of the easiest ways to organize and one that is very effective, too.

Bathtub Toy Storage

You simply place the shower rod at the base of the tub on the wall and then add the baskets using shower curtain hooks. Plastic tool boxes work perfectly for treasure boxes. You can assign one to each child and allow them to place whatever neat little things they find inside. The boxes can be stacked if needed so you have loads of extra room and they are lightweight so your little ones can carry them outside and place the items directly in them, which eliminates finding those tiny little treasures on the floor later.

American Girl Doll and Toy Storage
American Girl dolls are very popular with little girls and unfortunately for moms, they come with a ton of accessories. A very inexpensive fabric storage bin that slides under the bed is the perfect solution for all that American Girl Doll stuff. Under the bed storage bins have sections that you can use to keep everything organized. If you stick shoe boxes into those sections, they’ll be a bit more stable and you can keep smaller items like shoes and doll jewelry in Ziploc bags so that nothing gets lost. This would work for any type of toy but we thought it was the perfect storage solution for dolls and their accessories.

Doll Clothes Organization
Dolls have so many clothes. Really, sometimes we’re jealous of the amount of clothes that these little toys have. In order to organize them, you just need some colored scrapbook paper, gallon sized Ziploc bags and a little time. You just use the paper to separate outfits and you can fit two into each gallon bag. Have your daughter help you to choose the outfits with accessories like shoes, purses, etc. and then put everything into the bags. When you’ve got all of the clothing in bags, store them in plastic or canvas bins. They’ll be organized and no longer taking up room in the toy box. Plus, she’ll be able to find everything she needs when she plays with her dolls.

This project was originally for a nursery but we thought that it would be great for toddlers and even older kids. You just need to build a wall of oversized blocks from wood and MDF boards. You can build them out as far as you have room to accommodate and each little block adds additional storage. Imagine how well you could keep those bedrooms organized! The blocks are so adorable and you can paint them whatever colors you want. Make alphabet blocks or if you have older kids, choose another type of decoration. Either way, they’ll add loads of storage.

Pottery Barn Knock-Off Storage
Pottery Barn is great and has a lot of great products but they’re not typically cheap. Instead of spending a few hundred at Pottery Barn to get storage for toys, just build your own Pottery Barn knock-off storage unit. You can build a 6 unit storage bin for less than $40 which is a great savings over the $200 that you’ll spend to buy it at PB. They give you a lot of room to store toys of all sizes, too so you can get those rooms tidied up and perfectly organized.

Dollhouse Bookcase
Build your little girl a dollhouse bookcase. She’ll love keeping her books, stuffed animals, or other toys on it and you’ll love that you can build it for around $50 whereas buying it would be a couple hundred bucks. You’ll need wood of course, as well as screws and the general wood building type supplies and tools. You also need to choose paint colors, although we think the pink and white are perfect. It depends however, on your daughter’s room colors. You’ll get six rather large shelves and the overall look of the dollhouse is really adorable. You could also do it like a garage for little boys. Just change the colors up a bit to make it more “manly”.

Cute Animal Storage Jars
Take a few old pickle jars (or similar jars with lids) and add plastic animals and you have adorable storage jars that kids will love putting their things in. These are great for crayons and other craft supplies or you could keep puzzle pieces, small cars or dolls or anything rather small in them. You just paint the lids of the jars whatever color you want and then attach a plastic animal. You know, those zoo animals that are always laying around or even plastic army men for little boys. If you have young children, you may want to consider plastic jars instead of glass but the same rules apply for adding the animals.

Pegboard Organization
Ok, we just love pegboards. There, we’ve said it. Pegboards are an organizer’s dream. If your kids need extra storage, pegboards work perfectly and for many reasons. You can use them to keep papers and other similar items neatly off the floor but even better, you can attach baskets to them to hold smaller things like crayons, pencils, small cars and dolls, and just about anything else you may want to put in there. Just pick up some cheap plastic baskets in different sizes (the Dollar Store has several for $1 or less) and attach them to your pegboard. You can hang the pegboard on the back of a door, on the wall, or just about anywhere else you have room.

Hide Away Storage
If you have storage units, bookshelves, or other ways of putting up toys but things still don’t seem terribly organized, it may simply be that you need to hide away your storage. There’s no shame in covering up things that don’t really look tidy. Take a spring loaded tension rod, like a shower curtain rod, and hang it in front of storage units or just hang a regular curtain rod there and hang a nice curtain that matches the room’s décor. The curtain will look nice and it will hide away all those toys and things that just really can’t be perfectly organized.

Hoopla Storage
Hoopla! We love that word and we love the storage that you can create from embroidery hoops. To create these adorable little storage bags, you’ll need a couple of scraps of fabric and an embroidery hoop. You can use whatever size you need and you should be able to find loads of hoops at yard sales and thrift stores for less than a dollar each. Toy Planters
Sometimes you just have to really use your imagination to come up with storage and organizing solutions. Take these planters for instance. This is the cutest idea and those planters are really inexpensive if you get them at flea markets, thrift stores, or yard sales. Imagine the storage potential. You just paint them in a colorful color (for the kids’ rooms) and then hang them on the wall. They’ll perfectly hold books, stuffed animals, larger dolls, and just all sorts of toys and things.

This DIY toy chest also doubles as a toy, which is the best kind of toy box. You build it to look like a little house or garage so girls will use it like a dollhouse and boys can use it to play with their cars and trucks. Plus, it holds all those toys so they’ll have everything that they need for playtime and when they’re finished, they just put everything back into their little play box and put it away. It’s lightweight so they can tote it around if they want and the best part is they can help you to decorate it so they’ll love it even more.

Fabric Storage Boxes
You can create the perfect little storage boxes for all those toys for about $6 a box. Really. A sheet of plywood costs around $6 (for the cheap stuff). You simply build the boxes from the plywood and then cover them with fabric which you may have on hand or if not, you can get from discount racks or yard sales for just a couple of bucks per yard. DIY Ikea APA Toy Box
Ah, Ikea hacks. We love them and you’ll love this APA toy box that you can make for just a fraction of what it would cost to buy. You can get the box for about $15 and then turn it into a great toy box that has a chalkboard top. Cover the sides with fabric and then just add chalkboard paint to the top. You may also want to paint the corners and side pieces to give it a good contrast. The box actually holds quite a bit for a $15 box and your little one will love helping you to customize it for their room. The chalkboard top is a great addition and gives them a play area as well as a place to organize their toys.

Adorable Idea for Kids’ Art – Make Your Own Display Board
This idea from Crate Paper Blog is great. You can make your own little displays to hang on the wall and give yourself somewhere to pin all those art projects from your little ones.
